Royals, Rogues, and Dragons Arise: Book 3 The Chronicles of Aarastad By Micah Swanson Harris-Fantasy Book Review

 Book Summary

"Cry 'Dragon' and let loose the leviathans of war!"

If you like character-driven fantasy, then this adventure in The Chronicles of Aarastad is for you.
Queen Freyja Ifguter takes the throne at last. But little bodes well for her new reign.
Ice dragons are stirring in the east...nations conspire against her...
And no one is safe as the vigilante Wurger Mendicant invades the palace itself!
The masked man is her exiled lover, secretly returned to settle old scores but dangerously positioning himself as the sworn enemy of the queen, the woman dearer to him than life itself.

Lust, love, and revenge drive the adventure as the Agents of the Rune Stone Ring trilogy reaches an action-filled finale that can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

On the Agents of the Rune Stone Ring Trilogy and author Micah Swanson
"...Witty banter...multi-layered characters..." -- Akita Shukla, Reedsy Discovery.

"True surprise in storytelling is rare...and always welcome." -- Mark Schultz, artist of The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian.

"An...experience that leaves you wanting more." -- Richard Dominguez, Goodreads .

My Review

The title of this novel truly is an introduction to what to expect in this book. The thing that got me was the word "Dragons" in the title. The story takes place in an alternative 19th-century Europe. The story is told in first person by Ambrose Daius, "Kai" Aurelianus where he is telling his history as well as the history of the kingdom of AArastad. You get a rare insight into what is happening from this character. He's come a long way since book one when he was just a scholar and a poet to finding a much grander role in life.

There is so much happening in this 360+ page book. The novel is broken into three books.

-Book 1: Summer of the Winter Queen

-Book 2: The Flames of Intrigue: The Frost of Dragons

-Book 3:The Autumn of Nations: The Leviathans of War

Surprisingly this book is full of humor as can be seen from just looking at the chapter titles such as

  • All My Sins Remembered
  • Ladies (Lying) In (Wait)ing
  • A Sticky Wicket Indeed
  •  A Woman's Vanity...Glass
  • Dragons on Parade
One scene that had me laughing was between the "hero"
and Sonya as they shared a kiss.

When she had finished, she stepped back, her cheeks warm and her breath short as she straightened her blouse. "And I," she said "have wondered about that...ever since the moment that I first met you."

"Sonya," I said and pointed at her, "this could be the beginning of a lovely relationship."

"Hardly," she sniffed, lifting her chin."Even if you don't get yourself killed. my curiosity is now satisfied. I am done with you sir."

"Yes, well, that's what your mouth is saying right now. But a minute ago? Your lips were saying, 'This is kissing I've been missing'.

Her eyebrows lifted as the red in her face deepened to a shade beyond that of the rouge on her face. She stomped her foot. "Why you uncouth, presumptuous, sir, are a troll!"

"And you, madame, are a gruff...a nanny goat."

"Baaaah!" she said and stuck her tongue out at me.

There are many scenes that are funny and have such quirky humor. There is also just as much drama and action too.

If you like High Fantasy and Adventure, then Royals, Rogues, and Dragons Arise: Book 3 The Chronicles of Aarastad is what you're looking for. Even though this is the third book, you still can enjoy this novel as a standalone, but it's always better when reading a series to read the books in the order written.
