Harbor Pointe: Book 12 of Hope Harbor By Irene Hannon-Small Town Contemporary Romance Reviewer

 Book Synopsis

As a principal dancer with a prestigious New York ballet company, Devyn Lee is far from her hometown of Hope Harbor on the Oregon coast. But when a family emergency compels her to return, her visit turns into an extended stay after complications arise.

Widowed millworker Aaron Steele pays no attention to the buzz in Hope Harbor about the famous dancer in town. Until his grieving nine-year-old daughter takes a fancy to Devyn after she agrees to help with a fundraising show for a local charity in which the young girl is performing. As the show--and Devyn--begin to lift his daughter's spirits, his own life is brightened by the beautiful ballerina as she slowly but surely captures his heart.

But what are the odds that such an accomplished, polished woman from the city could ever fall for a small-town lumberman with two left feet?

Bestselling and award-winning author Irene Hannon once again transports readers to the irresistible beauty and romance of the beloved coastal small town of Hope Harbor.

My Review

After reading Harbor Pointe, the twelfth book in the Hope Harbor series, it immediately made me want to read the entire series. Having read other Irene Hannon books, I already knew she was a master at writing emotional novels. Character development is truly this author’s superpower, and this book showcases that beautifully.

The story follows famous, talented ballerina Devyn Lee, who is summoned home to the Oregon coast after her estranged sister, Lauren, is critically injured in an accident. Devyn returns with mixed feelings, unsure of how she will be received. Having grown up in a small town myself, I know all too well how quickly "chit-chat" spreads, and word of the famous dancer's return travels fast.

Enter widowed dad Aaron Steele and his nine-year-old daughter, Isabel, who are both grieving the loss of Isabel's mom in an auto accident. Because his unhappy marriage had deteriorated before her death, Aaron isn't looking for love, spending all his time working at the local mill and caring for his daughter. As a romance, readers can clearly see where the story is heading once Devyn and Aaron meet. However, the true beauty lies in the journey they take as they navigate their own feelings, guilt, and redemption to allow love back into their lives.

The relationships in this book are wonderful. I loved Isabel’s cute bond with her dad, her grandpa, and especially Devyn. Grandpa is quite the character and spots the attraction between the leads before either of them do! Another standout is Charley, the wise taco stand owner who dispenses incredible advice to his friends and customers. His insights ultimately open the way for Devyn and Lauren to heal their relationship. Not having read the other novels, I have a strong feeling Charley plays a part in helping people throughout the rest of the series, too.

Two quotes truly captured the heart of this book for me:

  • "It seems to me that the best way to overcome the past is to put our energy into creating a better future."
  • "Love is a powerful force that can soften hearts and work miracles."

This is a fantastic book about relationships, love, support, healing, and hope. It is one of those ultimate "feel-good" novels, the kind where, by the time you put it down, that warm feeling stays with you long after the final page.
