Q & A with the Author:
Tell us about your writing - What genre do you prefer to write?
I write historical romance—specifically the Regency—that has been described as sweet but with a lots of sizzle.
What about you as a person? What do you do to relax?
I walk daily—both for exercise and because I enjoy it. I also like to hike. Music is also a big deal for me. I sing and play the harp. I also love ballroom dancing.
Do you write to a music, and do you want to share your playlist?
I usually turn on Pandora when I write. There is a Regency Era music station that I like. I also listen to instrumental/new age—nothing with lyrics or a drum beat. If I’m somewhere without internet, I listen to a harp or piano CD.
"All writers must have cats, especially if they write fantasy or speculative fiction." Do you have a stand on this one? Any cute pictures of your kitty or other pet?
I am definitely a cat person but I do not currently have one. My last cat died and I haven’t gotten another cat. I might get a pair of kittens in the future if I can sweet talk my non-animal lover husband into it, but we’re cat-free—for now ;-)
What organizations do you recommend for those wanting to become writers?
That depends on what you write. If you write romance, I recommend RWA Romance Writers of America. If you write children’s or teen books, I recommend SCBWI which stands for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Other options are to find a local Nanowrimo group; from what I know, some offer workshops, others only give encouragement to write a book in a selected month. You could go online and enter local writer’s group in your search engine, and see what comes up. Then visit them a few times to see if you are a good fit with them before you join.
Any advice you'd like to share about writing?
Be humble and teachable. Too many new authors have kind of a chip on their shoulder and are totally closed to constructive criticism. If someone tells you there is an aspect of your story that needs more work, take them at face value; they are almost always right. If they tell you what you should do to fix it, take that with a grain of salt because they are often wrong.
If you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?
That’s easy. I’d want to go to Regency England to do my research first hand.
What color would you wear if you had only one choice?
Blue. Every color of blue is beautiful and there are so many shades that I’d never get bored.
