Excerpts
(1) He puts me on edge. The last thing I need is someone trying to read me. I meet his eyes defiantly. Blake observes me a second more, then grins revealing white, even teeth. “Sounds pretty great, but why? Why not do the normal thing? Go to college, get a job, become a responsible adult.” My defensiveness morphs into aggravation. “Guess we just have different definitions of responsible and, most likely, normal.” Sensing my mood, Nichole makes some excuse and leaves. Blake leans across the space between us, the fire reflecting in his eyes. “Our definitions are probably a lot closer than you think, Dez,” he says with an intimacy that makes me twitch. Nobody calls me Dez. I’ve never liked that nickname. “You know, Thomas.” I emphasize my use of his last name—Thomas suits him better anyway. “I don’t think I like you.” Never breaking eye contact, he laughs quietly. “I know,” he says. “But you will.”

 (2) Ten days. Ten days of brutal analysis down and I wake up to the realization I’ve lost. Lost my faith, dignity, reason. After being chipped apart bit by bit, it’s all gone. Maybe it was the memory of the flash flood, or the last Doren-supervised beating. Regardless, somewhere along the way, I lost it all for a father I’ve never met. Knocking on the door, Talbot enters. It’s something he’s done religiously ever since I mentioned how disconcerting his sudden appearances were. “Ready for more analysis?” “Abuse.” The word slides off my tongue. He glances at my tray of uneaten food and his eyes disappear under a hood of regret. “De—” “Talbot, I’m…” My mouth forms around the word. With one word I could forget, could go home. That word braces itself in me, becoming impossible to say, if for no other reason than the fact that I’ve come this far.

 (3) Following the rescue came the terror. Terror for what I’d done, what I could do. The realization that my abilities extended beyond what I had ever, ever anticipated. I’d been pushing myself, not attempting the impossible. Emotions from that night teem inside of me; so much rage from my date, fright for the injured people, and ultimately dismay for myself. For what I am. After fruitless searching, I thought I accepted it. Gave up on ever understanding. But I didn’t. I stare down at my empty yet terrifyingly powerful hands. Clenching them into fists, I spin and sprint away. Again I internalize the useless emotions, the lingering doubt. Hope. This hope I’ve been given is a dangerous thing.

(4) “So, Blake. You’ve obviously ridden quite a bit. What exactly is it you’re looking to get out of these lessons?” “Loaded question, loaded answer.” I hear him murmur as we reach the top of the ridge and the vastness of the desert opens before us. Blake rides up beside me. From his taller horse, he looks down on me. “Didn’t I tell you? I want to figure you out.” “Well, let’s speed this torture along then, huh? What is it you want to know?” He touches his hand to his chin. “Right now?” I nod sharply. His hand drops, his facial muscles falling into hard, serious lines. “How to get you to trust me.” [...] His insightful eyes are clear and deep. In an instant, I know why I dislike him. He sees too much. And it’s not him I distrust. It’s me. I don’t trust myself to be able to keep my secret from him. “I trust you,” I say. “Liar.” “No, really. I trust you…” He raises his eyebrows speculatively. I cover my lie with a smile. “I trust you to be the most difficult fifty bucks an hour I’ll ever make.”

 Excerpt:
In this scene, Gretchen learns that Kian has a secret dream to be a carriage driver on the island. She has a dream of her own and knows the power of them, so she is determined to help him achieve his goal. "It was a stupid dream. I should sell it, ta pay ya." Kian jerked the covering into place and turned away. "Nein. No." She followed him. "Dream is not stupid. Dream is good." She slowed down to hit the correct sound at the end. Just so he understood. He yanked pieces of oak from the pile near the door and dropped them into her pail. "I help you vith your dream." She pulled out the bigger pieces and returned them to the stack before tugging the handle from his grip. Selecting the right size for the cook stove, she filled her bucket. "You see." "Why?" He stared at the wood pile and huddled in his jacket. She didn't want to think too hard about the why. Instead, she clasped the pail to her chest and hustled for the door. He beat her there and pushed back the snow, so she could squeeze through the opening. Before she exited, he stayed her with a hand on her arm. "Why?" "Because I have the dreams, too. And you are helping to make them true." She ducked under his arm and walked into the cold. More than he knew. Maybe more than was safe for her heart.

Book Details:
Charlee was angry . . .

What do you do when your boss makes someone else the lead on a big renovation project that should rightfully be yours? You quit. On second thought, that might not be the best idea, but Charlee Jackson has never been one for second thoughts. Instead, she lands a big contract of her own. She’s jumping into her new life—work boots, tool belt and all. Now she just needs to form a company and hire contractors and buy supplies and get an office . . . and not fall in love with her former boss's son. Yeah. Definitely not that last one.

Peter was torn . . .

You can’t date someone who works for you, but now that his dad let Charlee walk out the door, Peter Elliot is considering his options. Charlee was their top renovation expert, his best friend’s sister, and the only thing that made the drudgery of running a large construction business bearable. But how do you date a competitor, especially one your father is trying to drive out of business? It would be stupid to make your dad angry right before he retires and hands the company over to you. Right?

When Charlee and Peter are scheduled to work on the same Indulgence Row house, their feelings and priorities are put to the test. They need to make a choice, and they better be quick about it, because the whole mixture is curing fast and threatening to crumble to pieces.

My Review:
There were so many reasons that I liked reading Love Under Construction. My first thought as I got into the story was how realistic the characters were. Both of the main characters, Charlee and Peter were portrayed  as real people, not so perfect, but very likable. They had been childhood friends and lately co-workers until Charlee leaves Peter's family business and starts up her own construction company. Things aren't wonderful with Charlee leaving and Peter's father wanting to make Charlee's life miserable for leaving. Peter on the other hand is in love with Charlee, but she doesn't know. One thing I was really happy about, is that the author didn't drag out this part of the story. About 1/3 of the way in, Peter tells Charlee about his feelings towards her. This doesn't mean that things are all amazing from here out, there are still many challenges and stepping stones for them along the way. In fact Peter says something about how they will have to take relationship lessons called, 'How to remodel a friendship into a romantic relationship.' This would also describe much of what happens in the story too.

Another great reason to read this book is that even though it's a romance it is full of humor. I was giggling through many of the funny things that happened and what was said. The dialogue is so much fun and written very well. In one scene Peter is comparing friendship to French fries and relationships to mashed potatoes. Charlee teases him saying she likes mashed potatoes and Peter hushes her telling her not to mock "The Relationship Master". These ideas are actually explained in more detail and make a lot of sense, but Peter's cute personality shines through in the process. Peter is a great lead man who is very appealing to me and I know he will do the same for other female readers.

Though it seems like many things keep these two apart in the book, it is such a fun ride along the way. This book is also very appealing to those who love watching shows found on HTV where people's homes are remodeled. I enjoyed seeing the changes and improvements that were made on businesses and homes that were described in such wonderful detail. It was also nice to see a confident, determined woman not let things get her down.

This romance will be enjoyed by adult readers that want a little spice in a romance, but where things are still kept clean. With a great plot, fantastic characters and the right amount of humor and kissing, Love Under Construction is built for one terrific read.

Book Blitz and Giveaway for Scattering Stars by Wendy C. Jorgensen

Wendy C. Jorgensen grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and began writing in second grade, furiously recording her hopes and dreams in a denim-covered diary. Besides hanging out at the library, she loved soaking up the rays—while reading a book, of course. During her sophomore year of high school, Wendy’s family moved to Carson City, Nevada, and she thought her life had ended. The desert, sagebrush, and cowboys were a far cry from the ocean, palm trees, and surfers of Florida. Fortunately within six months, the family relocated to Lake Tahoe, and her outlook improved dramatically.

Wendy started college at the University of Colorado in Boulder, followed by a year at the University of Nevada in Reno and two years at Brigham Young University, where she worked as a reporter and copy editor for The Daily Universe. A decision to take a short break from school turned into a twelve-year hiatus in Lake Tahoe. After a two-year stint in the civil engineering program at California State University in Sacramento, Wendy returned to Colorado and graduated from CU with a degree in English Writing. It was a long, but valuable, educational journey.

After twenty years in Colorado, Wendy recently moved back to Northern Nevada, close enough to Lake Tahoe to enjoy the beautiful scenery but far enough away to escape the heavy winters. She lives with a wonderful husband who’s a financial guru–thank goodness–and a golden retriever who’s often mistaken for a sloth. Her two brainy and creative sons challenge her intellect and make her want to be smarter. Wendy hopes someday to journey to the stars.

Deep in the Colorado Mountains lie many secrets. One of them could change the world.
When sixteen-year-old Eve Hunter returns to her childhood home of Ridgway, Colorado, she discovers a tight-knit colony of scientists and their families led by her grandfather, Jarak. Ten years earlier, her mother drowned suspiciously in a nearby canyon, and Eve becomes convinced the townspeople are hiding something. By lineage, Eve belongs to the colony and despite her reservations, she feels drawn to the colonists—particularly one of them: Daniel Winter, an eerily familiar, intense boy whose determination to monitor her and all the colonists is more than a little disturbing.
After Jarak reveals her true heritage, Eve learns her return to Ridgway is not a coincidence. She’s a key piece in Jarak’s plan. As secrets are revealed, Eve becomes entangled in a deadly game—and time’s running out to master the rules. One wrong move could jeopardize the future of the planet. "

Snippet

We emerged into a clearing and found Sarah, perched at the edge of a steep cliff, staring out at an incredible snow-covered panorama.
Daniel frowned seconds before Erik called out a shrill warning. “Sarah, don’t get so close to the edge. The mountain got a lot of snow last night, and it hasn’t had time to pack down.”
Sarah brushed off his warning. “Relax, Erik. Nothing’s going to happen.”
But something did happen. Erik must’ve heard a crack or sensed a shift in the snow bank because he shouted “Get back!” at the precise moment a section of the cliff gave way.
Emily and I screamed, expecting to see Sarah tumble over the cliff with the plummeting snow. But instead of falling, her body froze, suspended in mid-air, then shot forward, speeding directly toward Erik as if she’d been ejected from a canon.
