Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brené Brown-Book Review

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brené Brown
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My team of teachers read Daring Greatly this school year as part of our PLCs. We all really liked it and gained many ideas to incorporate into our teaching, as well as working together as a team, and using the ideas at home. Brene' Brown has such wonderful ideas and I felt she was able to explain things in an easy and clear way that most people can relate to. There were many times we all had awakenings that really helped us be better teachers, parents, and people in today's world. Learning to be vulnerable and opening your mind and heart does take courage, and Daring Greatly gives you the right pathway to follow.

Book Summary
Alexander Allerton, the Earl of Bloxley’s, greatest desire is to alleviate the suffering of the poor and less fortunate of England. So when his hackney carriage is involved in an accident that results in the death of one of those he is determined to help, he is devastated. Alexander vows to keep the promise he makes to the injured woman as she takes her final breaths: he will not rest until he finds her young son.

After a crippling accident years ago, Jane Hadford is accustomed to being largely ignored at social events. But being overlooked has allowed her to hone her observational skills—and she quickly perceives that all is not well with the handsome Lord Bloxley. When an unexpected opportunity arises to talk to the earl, he surprises them both by sharing with her his fruitless search for the child. Touched by Lord Bloxley’s story and by his desire to make things right, Jane determines to help him fulfill his promise. What she cannot anticipate, however, is that the quest she has chosen to undertake will bring into her life a small boy who will steal her heart and a gentleman who might well do the same.

My Review

Just when you think an author can't top her last book, along comes Sian Ann Bessey and her new novel,

An Uncommon Earl. It's the second book in the Georgian Gentleman series. I'm still smiling as I'm thinking back on this book and its fabulous, kind, and extraordinary characters.

Alexander Allerton, the Earl of Bloxley, is not like most men of his station. He cares about all people, especially the children and poor of England. He finds ways to change laws to help others. His mother wants him to marry a beautiful, rich, young lady of society. That's not where his interests lie. After the carriage he's riding in hits and critically injures a young woman selling flowers, he promises to find her young son. Now Alexander sets forth on a mission to honor this woman's dying wish.

Jane Hadford is kind, beautiful, intelligent, and crippled from a horse accident. She thinks that no one will ever want her and lives her life doing good. One night Jane, her high-spirited Aunt Millard, and Alexander end up hiding in the library at a ball. Soon, the Earl has poured his heart out to an attentive Jane telling her about his search for the young boy. This sparks many things, including a search for the boy and great interest in each other. Oh, how I enjoyed each chapter as Alexander and Jane started working together finally finding young Asher. The compelling plot and its irresistible characters bind you so you read and read until you're finished. All of the elements of this story aren't cheery. Your heart is torn apart from seeing the difficult situations the poor at this time lived through. Bessey has a way of writing scenes that are touching, teaches you about history, and magnificently pens words that make the story flow beautifully.

An Uncommon Earl is one of my favorite books I've read so far this year. I've read several books since this one, but the characters and emotions I felt have stayed with me. This 5 Star book comes highly recommended for readers of historical romance and those wanting to fall deeply into a novel and get lost for a few hours. You will be thanking me later.

Book Summary
Years ago, Mary Margaret Sullivan changed her name, boxed up her previous life, moved into the Eagle Gate Apartments, and hid her painful memories in her chicken-wire storage unit in the basement. But secrets have an inconvenient way of surfacing when least expected.

Three weeks before Christmas, an elegant man in a penthouse, a young woman named Carly—homeless and ill with pneumonia—and two calculating thieves invade Maggie's carefully reconstructed life, and in different ways, each is connected to Maggie's difficult past. As Maggie and friends nurse Carly back to health, hearts begin to heal with a hope for the future. But all is not as it seems. When faced with the shocking truth, Maggie must rely on her wits, her friends, and her own strength as never before.

My Review

Maggie's Place is a story that truly tugs at the heartstrings. This story is told from the perspective of a 70+ year old woman and a teenager. Both of these characters have dealt with many trials in life and still are trying to find the strength to survive physically, mentally, and emotionally. Maggie is so full of sorrow that she has a hard time letting joy in her life. Carly is distrusting of most people after being hurt so many times in her short life. Three weeks before Christmas these two women's paths cross and a miracle starts taking place.

This novel follows Maggie and her life at the Eagle Gate Apartments filled with Senior Citizens. Their friendships are strong but it doesn't totally take away the loneliness that is there in your later years. Carly is living on the streets and becomes involved with a group of thugs. Deep in her heart she wants to change and start her life again far away from the streets, thievery, and helplessness.

Maggie's Place takes your emotions on a joy ride and will toss your feelings up and down. This book has a lot of suspense and keeps you thinking and feeling deeply until the very end. Just be prepared with a box of tissues and an open heart to truly have a wonderful experience as you read, Maggie's Place.

Book Summary
Raised by a cold and distant mother, photographer Paisley Clark has spent her life daydreaming about the father she doesn’t remember. Paisley’s dream turns to reality when a DNA test brings her in contact with the mysterious man. With her financial situation a disaster and her childhood friend James Pressley-Coombes working across the pond in Scotland, Paisley is emboldened to accept her father’s invitation to visit him.

She arrives in the Highlands only to discover that she isn’t Paisley Clark at all but a titled lady, the daughter of a Scottish duke. Despite the warm welcome and the comfort of James’s presence, dangerous undercurrents surround Castle Rannoch, her father’s estate. Overwhelmed, Paisley takes refuge in her camera and James’s steady presence to provide a sense of normalcy in her rags-to-riches transformation. But her once-easy relationship with James is changing, deepening beyond friendship in a surprising twist of events. Before they have time to examine their feelings, Paisley inadvertently captures a shocking image in one of her photographs—a picture worth killing for.

My Review
Paisley is an ordinary girl who takes a DNA test and soon finds out she's the daughter of a Scottish Duke. After growing up without her father she is now taking a trip to Scotland to reunite with her father. Once there, Paisley is swept into a terrifying operation run by extremists that are determined to take her father and his family down. Thankfully, Paisley's great friend James Pressley-Coombes is there working in Scotland and is there supporting Paisley.

This book was wonderful! There was so much action and intrigue taking place. Readers are kept on the edge of their seats just waiting to see what will happen next because you know something will. Danger on the Loch is one of those books that WILL keep you up reading all night long. The plot is twisted and keeps you guessing until the end. There are so many surprises that you will be a little shocked when things unfold.

Danger on the Loch is a must read for those who love Romantic Suspense and a story that will thrill you every step along the way.

Book Summary
Four love stories, Six brothers, and the Inheritance that tears them apart.

The esteemed businessman, Nicholas Cohen, attempts to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart, Adele, despite his older brother ruining their wedding.

Meanwhile, his younger brother, Sam, impatiently waits for the girl of his dreams, Leanne, to finish her master’s degree hoping to whisk her away to a far-off land to complete her PhD.

Their younger brother, Jacob, falls for the captain’s daughter, Maryam, on a superyacht bound for the Caribbean, much to their parents’ dismay. One generation later, Emanuel elopes with a not-too-much-older woman, Aloise, three months after high school, less than 24-hours after they meet only to discover he’s married to enemy.

My Review
Billionaire's Son is the 5th book in a series. I really wished I could have read the other four books first. I actually felt a little lost. They are very intriguing characters so I wanted to know more about all of the members of this family. I know that I will be going back to read the previous books. The book has several POV's which to me only made this more interesting. The Sayid family has a lot of problems and most of them have to do with money and the fighting that takes place because of the wealth.

The novel is meant for older teens and adults. There are some adult situations but nothing too bad.The writing is good and I know that I'd like to read more from this author.

Midnight Sun (Twilight, #5) by Stephenie Meyer-Audio Book Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Audio Version
Listening length: 26 hours and 30 minutes

I've waited a long time to read Edwards's side of Twilight. I listened to the audio version and it was actually very good. In fact, I liked it a lot. It was great to get the vampire's side of things. It actually is more exciting hearing it from Edward's POV. I really loved getting to know more about all of the Cullen family and their backstories.I liked the last 1/4 of the book the best when Edward and his family are racing to save Bella from the tracker. It was non-stop action which we didn't see or feel as much in the original story from Bella's POV.

I'm glad that Stephenie Meyer finished this book and released it. I remember being so frustrated when someone dropped the early version on the web and then Meyer said she wasn't going to finish it.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind at all if she went ahead and continued the series from Edward's perspective. In New Moon, Edward is in Rome with the Volturi for most of the book, so it would make a very interesting book learning how they truly run things.

***For those who don't know***

The Volturi are the largest and most powerful coven of vampires. They enforce the laws of the vampire world. The equivalent of royalty in the vampire world, the Volturi consists of 5 core members: Aro, Caius, Marcus, Sulpicia, and Athenodora.

I know some readers said they aged out of this series. I was already older (than all of the teenagers LOL!) when I first read the series, so I still enjoy getting lost in the world of Twilight. If you liked the Twilight books at one time, then you genuinely need to read Midnight Sun. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it!

My Review
This is not usually the genre I read, but man was this good! The non-stop action made it hard to put down and me accidentally reading into the wee hours of the morning. I will freely admit there was a lot of the military jargon that was unfamiliar but it didn't stop me from enjoying the plot and characters in this story. The POV does change a lot between several key characters in this novel. After a while though, it was easy to keep them apart and fall headfirst into this thriller.

It's funny but I kept thinking what a great movie this would be. It plays out just like that and there is a pretty big shocker at the end. I recommend this novel to those that love to read political and military thrillers, but even if this isn't your normal genre to read, you really need to give this fantastic book a chance.

Book Summary
Anduron, 1498

The king and queen are dead, murdered by one who will stop at nothing to rule. But the young princess―Rosemund―has survived, spirited deep into the forest by her parents' most trusted advisor. There, she finds refuge in a small cottage and a new life, one in which she must play a role that will ensure her survival. Soldiers are combing the countryside, searching for the lost princess, and they will not rest until she is found―and executed.

Rosemund's strength grows as she trains for battle and endures the hardships and dangers of peasant life. When chance brings Maxwell, a young man from the nearby village, into her life, Rose finds in him an ally and a friend. As her eighteenth birthday approaches, the time has come for Rose to reclaim her birthright, and in a court controlled by a vengeful new ruler, she must play a deadly game of politics in order to seize the throne that is rightfully hers.

My Review

I was so excited when I found out that Michele Ashman Bell had a new novel coming out. I was very interested because of the time period when this novel takes place. The Heroine is only 15 years old when the book starts. Right off, Rosemund has to grow up quickly as her parents, the King and Queen of Anduran are murdered in their sleep. A trusted royal adviser, Jacob, takes Rose and hides her away and teaches her how to protect herself and prepare to be the future Queen of Anduran.

I really loved how Rose started out as a young sheltered girl and eventually rises to become the young woman needed to reign over her country. This book is so inspirational, especially for teen and young adults. I will admit it inspired me too, even if I am an "older" lady.

There were so many excellent characters in this novel besides Rose. I also loved Jacob, Max, and Ricker. I can't wait to read more in this series. There is a little bit of romance in this first book but I know there will be more in the next one. The Crown of Rosemund is a fantastic start to a series that is full of action, adventure, and a great new world for readers to get lost in. I know that readers will also be renewed by the messages that all of us have greatness within us to achieve, the ability to overcome trials, and also become a Warrior Queen in our own lives.

Exclusive Author Interview with Michele Ashman Bell

1. When did you first have the idea to write The Crown of Rosemund?

I have been mulling over this idea for many years. My favorite books to read are stories about strong women who overcome difficult, impossible, challenges. Stories like these inspire me to dig deep and be strong and brave like them. My favorite stories are Not Without My Daughter and Follow the River. I continually ask myself if I would have the courage to do what they did. Joan of Arc is a phenomenal character and truly an ideal role model for women. At 16 she led armies to victory! I am also inspired by Esther in the Bible. She literally saved her entire nation by being brave and rising to the occasion even though she felt unworthy and unprepared. One day the title of the book came to me. That was all I had. I started asking myself who Rosemund was and why her story needed telling. It felt as if her story already existed and I had just discovered it and was able to write it.

2. Have you ever written a book before from this time period?

No, this is a first in this time period. I LOVE historical books and movies. During COVID I might have binge watched a few historicals during this period. It certainly solidified my desire to explore Medieval times and what life was like back then. A few favorite movies of mine are A Knight's Tale and The Princess Bride (book is great too). This era lends itself to romance and chivalry and war and kings and queens and the possibilities are endless.

3. What message do you hope readers gain from reading The Crown of Rosemund?

There are several messages (themes) to Rosemund's story. One, is exactly what Shakespeare said, "Some are born greatsome achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em.” It is only through preparation that we can be successful when opportunity arises. In the story Rosemund is hesitant to do what she has to do to become queen, but her mentor and guardian, Jacob, trains her in different ways so that when the time comes, she is ready. We will all have moments in our lives when we have to step up and do what it takes. It's at that moment you find out your true self. I also want the story to tell readers that we all have greatness inside of us and usually we don't realize it until something hard happens and we are forced to unleash it. I want this story to inspire and empower readers. I want them to see in themselves the strengths and abilities they possess to tackle life's problems.

4. Do you have a favorite character in this book? If yes, whom and why?
I love Rosemund. I love Jacob. and I love Maxwell. But Ricker is one of my favorite characters. We've just seen the tip of the iceberg of the role Ricker will play in the story. I love how funny he is and how fiercely loyal he is.

5. What keeps you wanting to write books?
I have asked myself this question many times, especially when my family is going through a challenge. Their needs will always come before mine or any of my own pursuits. But even though I sometimes step back for a month or even a year or two, I am always writing and gathering ideas. It is truly in my blood. What keeps me writing? I can't not write.

6. Are there other authors or books that have influenced you in your writing? I've mentioned Not Without My Daughter and Follow the River, but I absolutely love reading biographies. I am a fan of learning about people and places. I love Jane Austen (she writes incredible characters and plots) and J. K. Rowling (she creates worlds and creatures and amazing tension in her stories) and I grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder who just tells stories like no other.

7. What books can readers expect next from you?
I am working on a contemporary series coming about and three sisters. It will take place in different small towns around the country and I think readers will love these three girls a lot. I'm also going to write two more books in the Rosemund Series, The Rise of Rosemund and the Reign of Rosemund. Readers can expect more action, more excitement and much more romance! I also have a Victorian Christmas story I've written and I'm kind of obsessed with it. There's a lot to look forward to!

Meet Author: Michele Ashman Bell

What can I say, I'm a mother of four and grandmother of seven, who, after ten years of hard work, perseverance and a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of rejection letters, finally got a book published. As a young girl I was a devoted journal keeper.  I would express my most personal thoughts and feelings in my journal in a way I could never express them verbally.  Coupled with my great love for reading it only seemed natural to become a writer.During the course of having and raising my children, as a beginning writer, I spent any free time I had writing and learning the craft.  I attended workshops and conferences, joined critique groups (I have the scars to prove it) and sent many of my stories and novels off to magazines and publisher, only to receive rejection after rejection.  I came close a few times, but something wasn't quite right.Still to this day I wonder why I didn't give up.  You'd think after ten years of rejections I'd finally get the message.  Actually I know why I kept writing, I couldn't not write.  It's in my blood.  When I get cut, ink comes out.

There's something so wonderful and fulfilling about the creative process of developing characters and storylines and pouring your heart out on paper that can't be matched by anything else.  I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to write.  And I want to encourage anyone who has the desire to write to never give up on their dream.  If you want it bad enough and are willing to work hard enough, you will become published.  I believe that with all my heart because that's exactly how it worked for me. I grew up in St. George, Utah, where a lot of my family still lives, but now reside with my husband and family in the Salt Lake City area.  My favorite thing to do is support my kids in their many interests.  Between basketball, ballet and piano lessons we squeeze a lot into a week, but I wouldn't have it any other way.If you have any questions you'd like me to answer, please feel free to email me.  And thanks, for all your support.

Book Summary
Georgina Ballard has been disappointed in love more than a few times, a fact that she is uncomfortably aware of amid her sister’s wedding preparations. When her elderly aunt Rowena bids Gigi to accompany her on an art tour across Europe, Gigi hesitates but eventually resigns herself to the train journey alongside a group of aged art connoisseurs, if only to mollify her aunt.

Once aboard the Orient Express, Gigi is pleased to discover that not everyone on the tour is in their twilight years: Clyde Haskins, an energetic young art professor from the University of London, will serve as the group’s tour guide. Clyde is equally intrigued that a young lady has joined the tour, and Aunt Rowena and her friends immediately set out to play matchmaker. Clyde and Gigi both find humor in Aunt Rowena’s antics despite knowing that each is determined to keep their heart carefully guarded. Yet, the enchantment of their European exploration weaves an undeniable spell between them. When their journey ends, can their holiday love story endure the obstacles of real life?

My Review

Oh, how I loved, Until Vienna. I often can relate to a character so well that it feels like I'm living the same experience as the character. I loved the sweet, kind, and loyal Gigi. Even though she had lived through many disappointing things in her life, Gigi was still happy for others and their good fortune. Then there is Professor Clyde Haskins who is leading the art tour across Europe. Right off, Gigi is attracted to Clyde but he lets everyone know that he is a confirmed bachelor. Gigi's Aunt Rowena does her best to bring the two young people together. Many funny things happen as Aunt Rowena and her two friends try their hand at matchmaking. I loved how cool and collected both Gigi and Clyde were when it came to the older women and their shenanigans.

This series is so wonderful as we get to travel on the Orient Express with the characters. It was a wonderful premise when I first heard about it and I haven't been disappointed. I really loved the stops along the way in this novel. I felt like I was perusing the art galleries right along with the characters. The whole book felt like this animated dance between the main characters. Some days it was elegant and others it was quite awkward. Nevertheless, I loved to be there to see how their friendship developed leading to something much more.

This book can be read alone even if you haven't read the first two books in the series. Until Vienna was a pleasure to read and quite entertaining too. Heather Moore once again, writes an incredible romance, this time showing that second chances are there if we only reach out and take them.
