My Review

This was an exciting debut novel. A Bounty of Secrets & Rebellion has many things in it to draw readers in. There are great characters, a lot of action, romance, and mysteries to keep you guessing...even until the next novel comes out.

The magic system was different and exciting, especially as they come from The All Gods. I always love books with elemental magic. The secrets in this novel are extended far and wide to many groups of people but eventually are connected. This brings some surprising twists near the end that I wasn't expecting.

If you like YA Fantasy books with danger, suspense, exciting magic, forbidden love, and some great plot twists, then you'll truly enjoy A Bounty of Secrets & Rebellion.

{{{Excerpt from A Bounty of Secrets and Rebellion}}}

Griff ducked into the chief’s hut and gave the Hoken greeting as his father returned the gesture.

“Griff, my son!” the chief said with a smile, coming forward to embrace him. Griff smiled widely back, returning his father’s warm embrace. He had the same dark, black eyes and long black hair that Alo had, but, to Griff, it turned his father’s features more comforting and inviting as opposed to firm and fierce. Behind him, Griff saw Alo standing in the corner with his arms crossed and his brows drawn together.

“What’s wrong with Alo? He looks like you just condemned him to a journey of solitude for six months.”

The chief chuckled, and the beads on his feathered headrest jangled. “It is a short journey and not in solitude, son.”

Griff eyed his father suspiciously, not sure he was liking where this was going. The chief gave Griff a loaded look. “I need you two to go and see the Oracle.”

Griff instantly shook his head. “No, Father. Please. Don’t make me go there. That lady gives me the creeps.” Not to mention the fact that she was the one responsible for Halyn’s fate.

The chief lowered his eyebrows in reproach. “Griff, the Oracle is a great woman, and you would do well to speak honorably of the All God’s chosen.”

“Can’t you just send Alo? I’m sure he doesn’t want to travel with me anyway. That’s why he looks so grumpy,” Griff replied, waving a hand toward his brother.

“Please, you two act like you can’t stand a simple two-day journey to Pavati. You’ll be there and back before you know it,” the chief said warmly, guiding Griff over to stand by Alo.

“The last time we went on a two-day journey together, Griff set the forest on fire, and we nursed burns for weeks,” Alo replied irritably.

“That was an accident!” Griff shouted in defense. “I put the stones around the fire like I was supposed to.”

“But you didn’t dig the hole first in your haste to get something cooking so you could eat!”

“Funny, you were just as eager to eat that turkey as I was. Plus, I don’t remember you making an effort to dig the hole either!”

“You’re always thinking of your stomach!”

“No, I’m not!”

“Yes, you are!”

“That’s enough!” the chief roared. Griff and Alo immediately went silent. “You two will journey to Pavati to meet the Oracle,” their father declared firmly. “She has requested your presence and you will not delay. Is that understood?”

“Yes, Father,” they each replied sullenly.

Just then, Halyn stepped into the hut with embalmed leaves. “Alo, I have the treatment you requested for your shoulder.”

Griff’s mouth twitched. Alo was such a baby. She walked over and started placing the leaves on the shoulder he had used to cart the elk.

“Halyn, my dear, how would you like to journey to Pavati with my boys? The Oracle has a message for them, and I believe they could use your presence as a buffer along the way,” the chief said with a wink at Halyn.

Her eyes met Griff’s for the briefest moment and then she focused on her ministrations as she said, “I’m not sure anyone can buffer these two, but I’ll do my best.”

The Wild Journey of Juniper Berry By Chad Morris and Shelly Brown-Middle Grade Fiction Book Review

 Book Summary

Juniper Berry knows how to handle bobcats, bears, and mountain lions, but can she survive the toughest predator of all—middle school?

Eleven-year-old Juniper Berry lives with her family deep in the wild woods. Living off the grid is pretty exciting, but her happy life in the wild ends abruptly when her younger brother gets sick, and they move to the city to be closer to the hospital. Juniper and her older sister end up living with cousins they hardly know and attending public school for the first time, which is harder to navigate than the wild woods ever were. Juniper feels like a wolf cub separated from her pack.

As the hospital bills for her brother start piling up, Juniper knows they’ll need to be paid before the family can go back to the woods, so she decides to make enough money to help out. With her cousin Alayna’s support, Juniper starts posting videos filled with her wisdom from the woods, hoping to get a following. But what if it doesn’t work? What if the bills never get paid? Not going home to the wild is Juniper’s worst nightmare. While she’s stuck in the city, she might as well make the most of it, like sticking up for Alayna, who’s being bullied by her supposed friends, for starters.

The Wild Journey of Juniper Berry is a story about perseverance when faced with difficult and unfamiliar challenge, belonging and finding your identity, compassion for others, and learning that our differences can sometimes be our strengths.

My Review

Have you ever wondered how a fish out of water would survive in our crazy, technological, social-media-filled society? The Wild Journey of Juniper Berry by Authors Chad Morris and Shelly Brown has written a story for middle-grade readers that shows you exactly this.

Eleven-year-old Juniper has lived her whole life with her family off the grid and learning to love nature. When her younger brother Hank becomes ill, the family is forced to re-enter modern society to get medical help for him. This is when the changes begin for Juniper whose POV is used to tell this story. There are many humorous moments as Juniper is introduced to many things we take for granted, like a fridge, microwave, a shower, using a flush toilet, and eating pizza for the first time. I really liked Juniper who despite realizing she really doesn't fit in doesn't change to make her blend in. She truly is a strong and confident girl who loves her family and will support them whatever it takes.

There are some strong themes of bullying, split families, and anxiety attacks, that are beautifully written for this age readers to understand. This novel also has such wonderful characters from Zombie the Goose,  grumpy Mrs. Nakamura, stuck-up Sophie, and Juniper's cousins. Readers will learn lessons of having confidence in your own gifts and talents, standing up for others...even if you don't like someone, and staying strong as families in any circumstance.

Chad and Shelly write the best books for Middle-Grade readers. The Wild Journey of Juniper Berry is another accomplishment in their growing list of novels that change kids' lives as they navigate the journey toward being an adult. I highly recommend this heart-filled book.

My Review

Crown and Serpent is a prequel novella in the Fate of Eyrinthia Series. This series has been so good. When I heard what this novella was about I was so intrigued. This time we get to read the story of the evil King Henri and his equally evil wife Queen Iris.
The biggest surprise for readers is finding out at their first meeting neither of them was seriously heinous. Experiences in their lives eventually headed them in that direction. I actually was charmed by both of them and loved their witty banter. This is not to say I like them and they're horrible at what they do in the other novels. But I had a new understanding of how life sometimes shapes us in ways that we have no control over.
This novella must be read by all Fate of Eyrinthia fans. Getting this insight into the character's early lives made me look at many things differently. This novella is not a happy one, and there are some deaths by poison but it was another great read by Heather Frost.

~~~~~~Excerpt from Crown and Serpent~~~~~~
“Tell me what you love most in the world.”
Iris stared at Henri. She didn’t understand his captivation with her, but they were stuck together for the rest of this dance. She couldn’t very well ignore him.
She could try to dissuade his attention, though.
She smiled a bit thinly. “I love poison.”
Henri blinked, though he was skilled enough at dancing that he didn’t miss a step. “Poison?”
“Yes.” Her head tipped to the side. “Don’t you think poison is interesting?”
“I’ve never really thought about it, to be honest.”
“It’s my favorite area of study.”
“Why?”
Challenge was in his voice, and Iris’s spine straightened as she rose to it. “Did you know there’s a toad in Zennor that secretes a venom that can paralyze every muscle in a man’s body? It’s absorbed through the skin, so there’s not even a need to pierce the flesh. And did you know there’s a berry in Devendra so poisonous, it can kill a person mere seconds after eating it? There’s a root in Mortise that can be ground up and dried, and added to tea—and it will boil your insides. There’s even a powder that can burn you. No flames—just a harmless-looking white powder. There are potions that will make a person sleep, and others that will keep a person awake. Some things can even force a person to tell the truth—whether they want to or not. It’s endlessly thrilling to experiment with what nature offers. Perfecting it, and making it your own . . . It’s my ultimate passion.”
Henri stared at her, his expression impossible to read.
Iris’s cheeks warmed under his scrutiny. “What?”
“You’ve convinced me,” he said. “Poison is utterly fascinating.”
They still moved together to the sound of the stringed music, dancing on the floor with the other couples. But having his focus solely on her, Iris felt like they were completely alone.
“How did you come to know so much about poison?” Henri asked.
“It was my father’s passion. I joined him in his research, and it eventually became mine as well. I’ve learned much from books and experimentation.”
His forehead creased. “That sounds dangerous.”
“It can be, if you’re not paying attention. But there’s an order to things. An expected reaction. It’s exhilarating when you find the right blend or the proper dilution . . .” She trailed off.
Henri was smiling. “Utterly fascinating,” he repeated. This time, she didn’t think he was talking about poison.
Her face felt even more flushed than before. Almost feverish. Fates, what was wrong with her?
The sound of applause made her jolt. The song had ended.
She attempted to pull away, but Henri held her fast.
“Unfortunately, I must dance with several other ladies tonight,” Henri said. “But are you free tomorrow afternoon?”
Her breathing came out a little strained. “Your Highness, I don’t think you should spend any more of your time with me.”
“Are you free tomorrow afternoon?” he repeated, unruffled.
Across the floor, all the couples had broken apart—except for them. She could feel people staring.
That uncomfortable flush wound down her neck, heating all her skin. “Fine,” she said through her teeth.
The corner of his mouth lifted. “You’re free, then?”
“Yes. As long as you let me go.” She tugged at her hand, which he still clasped.
Henri smiled. “For now.” He lifted her hand and brushed his lips against the back of it.
Her skin tingled from the unexpected kiss, and her heart stuttered in her chest.
The prince seemed wholly unaffected as he released her hand and inclined his head, his lips quirked and his eyes glittering as he said, “Until tomorrow afternoon, Lady Iris.”
My Review
I read this at the beginning of the year and realized I had forgotten to review it. Flashes of Memory is book 2 in the Constantine Capers series by Natalie Brianne. I read book one in this series last year and really liked it. This book was even better because I already knew and loved the main characters.
Once again Mira and Byron are completely involved in a mystery and loads of danger. Byron still has his memory problems but he starts having flashbacks in this novel. We also meet both of their brothers and find out more about each of their backgrounds and also learn more about the organization, The Order of Circe. The best part is when the twosome are invited to Buckingham Palace and all of the mystery and intrigue that happens while there.
This novel had the right mixture of romance, mystery, suspense, and excitement. Flashes of memory was a great second book in the series. There were a few things left up in the air which makes waiting for book three very hard.
***Meet Author Natalie Brianne***
Natalie Brianne's love of writing might be traced back to an old Rainbow Macintosh Laptop she received for her 8th birthday. Perhaps it came from years of storytelling and the discipline of wonder. Or maybe, she was born to write and didn’t realize it until a book sprung out of her fingertips somewhere between a house in Pleasant Grove, Utah and a bus on its way to Edinburgh, Scotland.
She received her degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities from BYU. While she could have studied English or Creative Writing, she opted to learn more about culture, distant lands, and people in hopes of writing better stories. Much of her first book, Constantine Capers: The Pennington Perplexity was written when she lived at 27 Palace Court, London, walking the streets as if she were her characters.
While her interests in writing spread across genres, you can always expect her work to be imaginative, clean, and clever.
My Review
Chiara's Choice was written by one of my favorite authors, Chalon Linton. She has a way of writing such relatable characters that you remember for a long time. Chiara's Choice is part of the Everly Series that features the Jamison family. I've loved the previous two books, Escape to Everly Manor and Forever Phoebe. This third book is a fantastic addition to the series.
Chiara Madero is the daughter of an Italian Baron looking for the perfect man her parents want her to marry. This lady is full of spice and doesn't want to head into a loveless marriage like her parents. Here she is in the London Marriage Mart and isn't very impressed with what she is seeing.
Abraham Jamison is a wonderful and perfect gentleman but not a first son. He has nothing to offer a baron's daughter. When these two people meet they clash and fireworks ensue. If you are looking for an enemies-to-lovers trope, you are reading the right book. There are moments when you get frustrated with both Chiara and Abraham. Chiara is very much in control until readers find out that she feels exactly the opposite. I grew to like her more and more as the story went on. Abraham also gained courage and strength as he spent more time with Chiara.
Chiara's Choice is a love story about two people that fight hard for their love. They both are up against societal expectations and need the bravery to stand up for themselves. Just know that there is a surprising "Happily Ever After" that will make readers smile. I'm excited to see what happens in the next Everly Series book.
My Review
The Trespassers is a new suspense series by the wonderful Stephanie Black. This author writes some of the best mystery suspense novels I've read. I couldn't wait to read the first book in this new series. I want to say, my high expectations were met!
The interesting part about this suspense novel is that the main character Rayna has paranormal abilities. As she investigates her "powers" she signals to a secret government group that she is a "Trespasser". When a Trespasser is found they have two choices, either they go along with this team and become one of them or they become eliminated.
The suspense part in this novel are the many deaths that are happening in Rayna's hometown. So many clues lead toward Rayna being involved in the deaths. I couldn't believe how things were stacking up against her. Damon Hale is a Trespasser sent to investigate Rayna. He also is seeing Rayna as a killer but the more he gets to know her, the more he is confused by the facts and his feelings. Of course, day by day Rayna and Damon can't help but grow closer together and there is a definite attraction.
There are so many things happening in this novel, that you can't read fast enough as you gather clues. The accusations are flying hard and fast and everyone is looked at as the guilty party. Red Herrings anyone? Do you notice I'm not giving you many clues about the deaths and who could be guilty? Well, this is what I do because I want you to read this amazing suspense novel. Trespassers is going to be a brilliant series and I can't wait to read the next installment.
