 Book Summary

The first kiss crumbles her world. The second mystifies. The third unbalances. The fourth sends her reeling. And the fifth –ah, the fifth . . .

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, Miss Sarah Meacham has always behaved circumspectly, until an emotional outburst directed at a well-deserved gentleman earns her the nickname of Miss Shrew. As a result, she vows to never trust—or love—again. But when her father decrees that her younger sister cannot marry the man of her dreams until Sarah has secured a suitor of her own, she is faced with a dilemma: Deny her sister marital bliss or feign an interest in the next gentleman to come along, at least until their father relents.

Mr. Ian Collum is no gentleman. A tradesman and newcomer to Brighton, he has been searching high and low for the perfect house. When he at last discovers Ivy Cottage, with its magnificent views, extensive lands, and a large oak tree reminiscent of his favorite childhood escape, he will do whatever it takes to obtain it. Trouble is, the owner of the property will only sell if Ian agrees to court the beautiful and infamous Miss Shrew—a woman as intent on eluding Ian as he is on pursuing her.

My Review

Five Kisses is a book that I wish I could read for the first time, every time I read it. The title hooks you as you wonder about who will be getting and giving those five kisses. This fun romance has affinities to Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. The main characters Sarah Meacham and Ian Collum are so well matched. Every conversation between these two is witty and so humorous. What do you expect when you have two people that are determined to not fall in love and marry.

I love that Sarah's independent nature is not put down by her family members. Her father and sister love and support her. Sarah is told she needs to marry before her younger sister who is deeply in love and wants to marry now. The families in this story are not high society but more middle class. This is such a nice difference to read a story from this viewpoint.

Ian is so brilliant! He is kind, intelligent, hard-working, compassionate, and quick-witted. He is everything that Sarah needs but she doesn't realize it at first. The ways he shows his interest in her were some of my favorite things in the novel. Rachael has such a smooth writing style that delivers an elegant dance of words and feelings. This book was a pleasurable read from the first page to the last. Five Kisses was a clean, sweet emotional romance, and some of the best engaging dialogue you'll read all year. I highly recommend you not only put this novel on your to-read list but do yourself a favor and buy it now.

Meet Author Rachael Anderson

A USA Today bestselling author, Rachael Anderson is the mother of four and is pretty good at breaking up fights, or at least sending guilty parties to their rooms. She can't sing, doesn't dance, and despises tragedies. But she recently figured out how yeast works and can now make homemade bread, which she is really good at eating.
