My Review

The Word of the Muse is the third and final book in the Coseema Saga by Bridgette Dutta Portman. This book was filled with a lot of action as everything is finally coming to a head. The Emperor is on a rampage to wipe out the rebellion. Olive is on a mission to save as many people as she can knowing that soon she'll need to confront Coseema again.

This is one time I'll tell you that it's in your best interest to read books one and two before this third book. You honestly will be so confused and not understand the importance of things that are happening.

There were many shocking things that happened, especially in the final quarter of the book. People that had been evil became heroes, and others found gifts that they didn't know they had or had been lost, and Olive finally found peace within herself having more courage than she ever thought she could. There were so many great messages to be found in this book and the series. This is a wonderful book and series for teens and adults. It has such a great mixture of action, sci-fi, fantasy, and romance. It also had an ending that was so exciting and very fulfilling that readers will remember it long after the end of the book.

Excerpt 2:

Olive heard a faint sound—first a dull, distant roar, but gradually sharpening into individual cracks and pops and crashes. She tried not to think about the possibility that they couldn’t go forward. They’d come too far. It might not even be possible to go back. The flames might have already consumed the sand sledges, melting them into warped metal, like the fleet of battleships Burnash had destroyed.

“Let’s go,” said Reen firmly as she headed for the slope.

There was new urgency in the group’s steps as they followed her. But the embers grew more numerous, until they swarmed around them, stinging like insects when they touched Olive’s skin. The smoke grew thicker. Then Olive saw the flames, bright and orange and alive, feasting on the charred bodies of trees on the ridge to their left. The flames formed a wall as tall as the trees themselves, a great wave of fire that was moving fast.

Olive began to run.

Everyone hurtled up the slope. Olive was faster than Cayda, and she grabbed the girl’s hand, pulling her along like a doll and hauling her up when she fell.

The sound of the fire became a roar, like a spaceship’s engines.

Then Olive felt the wind change, and suddenly the wall of fire was in front of them. They skidded to a halt, Olive colliding with Bel and knocking them both down.

“This way!” Reen shouted, darting sharply to the right and up a ridge the fire hadn’t yet caught hold of.

Olive scrambled to her feet, grabbed Cayda’s hand again, and hurtled after Reen. Her exhaustion made the climb difficult; her shoes felt like blocks of concrete. She pushed on, and had nearly caught up with Reen, Kaleid, and Jambol when she realized Bel and Dewna were not with them.

She turned to see mother and daughter struggling up the slope, a river of flame sweeping toward them.
