Book Synopsis
Loyalty during Peril
In the heart of war-torn France, Isabelle Seauve's resolve is tested after her father sacrifices his life to protect her involvement in the French Resistance. Heartbroken, Isabelle becomes more dedicated to hiding Jewish children in and near the village of Sisteron despite the growing danger when she discovers a traitor within the Resistance ranks.
Truth amid Deception
As the shadow of betrayal looms, Isabelle's world collides with that of US Army Chaplain Peter Christensen, who carries emotional scars from his first position in Kentucky and his service in North Africa. Together, they face the brutal reality of war as the second D-Day--the Allied invasion of Provence--unfolds.
Bravery through Trial
Fifteen-year-old René Amblard narrowly escapes a devastating German attack that claims the lives of his mother and their fellow Maquis fighters. With a Jewish orphan girl at his side, René seeks out his cousin, Isabelle, for refuge while he contemplates revenge.
When the bombs of Operation Dragoon begin to fall, this unlikely group of heroes must find freedom in their souls before they can rebuild what has been destroyed.

My Review
The WWII historical fiction, From the Valley We Rise, is truly gripping. It is set in a France torn apart by war and highlights the vital work of the French Resistance and the Maquis fighters during World War II.
The story introduces three main characters. Isabelle is a young woman who works to rescue and hide Jewish children. René, her teenage cousin, joins the fierce Maquis guerrilla fighters. Peter is an American chaplain haunted by a deep and painful past. I found myself so nervous and tense while reading because danger lurked around every corner. The way the story switches between their perspectives and transitions between chapters is handled smoothly. This well-crafted novel makes history feel real and alive.
The book also features key events like the D-Day invasion, specifically Operation Dragoon in Provence. It shows how underground French Resistance fighters operated and describes a secret group that sheltered Jewish children and led them to safety. Reading this story is an emotional experience, so I won’t give away too many details about the characters or what happens. Be sure to check out the author’s notes at the end and the group discussion questions.
If you enjoy stories about history, especially WWII, you need to pick up From the Valley We Rise. It will draw you into the lives of these characters and teach you new things about that time.
