Book Summary
When Miss Tiffany Woodall assumes the identity of her half-brother after his death, she realizes she isn’t the only one with a secret to hide in this historical series debut, perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn and Sherry Thomas.
1784 London. Miss Tiffany Woodall didn’t murder her half-brother, but she did bury him in the back garden so that she could keep her cottage. Now, the confirmed spinster has to pretend to be Uriah and fulfill his duties as the Duke of Beaufort’s librarian while searching Astwell Palace for Uriah’s missing diamond pin, the only thing of value they own. Her ruse is almost up when she is discovered by Mr. Samir Lathrop, the local bookseller, who tries to save her from drowning while she's actually just washing up in a lake after burying her brother.
Her plan is going by the book, until the rector proposes marriage and she starts to develop feelings for Mr. Lathrop. But when her childhood friend, Tess, comes to visit, Tiffany quickly realizes her secret isn’t the only one hidden within these walls. The body of a servant is found, along with a collection of stolen items, and someone else grows mysteriously ill. Can Tiffany solve these mysteries without her own disguise being discovered? If not, she’ll lose her cottage and possibly her life.

A Novel Disguise must be read while holding your breath in anticipation and standing on your toes with excitement wondering what will happen next. This novel definitely kept me busy as a reader wondering who was behind every little misdeed and big things, like murder. It's one of those books where everyone is suspect and you are not sure who to trust, just like how the main character Tiffany felt. She was an amazing lady, in her forties, who was brave, somewhat reckless, and defiant according to societal standards of the time. Tiffany does things that most women then would only dream of doing or think were scandalous.
I also loved Samir, the local bookseller, and constable. He was quite the happy surprise, not only smart but accepting of Tiffany and her exploits. Samir who is half Indian and half white, went above and beyond the expected for a man of his color and station during the Georgian era. Tiffany and Samir had great chemistry from the first time they are seen together in the novel. It is quite the scene too and I couldn't stop laughing.
There is so much to love in this mystery, besides the love of books and the work of a librarian. There are many twists and turns in A Novel Disguise, making it very unpredictable but full of fun. There were moments that made you squirm a bit thanks to the local squire but also moments where you wanted to cheer at the end. I can't wait to read more of these mysteries and hope they are in the works.
