Book Description

August 5, 2013

Though she was only a child during the darkest days of Ireland s Great Famine, Katie Macauley feels responsible for the loss of her family s land and the death of her sister. Now a woman grown, Katie has left Ireland for America and the promise of earning money enough to return home again and plead for her family s forgiveness. She arrives in Hope Springs, Wyoming Territory, a town sharply divided between the Americans who have settled there, with their deep hatred of the Irish, and the Irish immigrants who have come searching for a place to call home. Her arrival tips the precarious balance, and the feud erupts anew. Even in the midst of hatred and violence, however, Katie finds reason to hope. Two men, as different as they are intriguing, vie for her heart, turning her thoughts for the first time toward a future away from Ireland. Katie must now make the hardest decision of her life: stay and give her heart a chance at love, or return home and give her soul the possibility of peace.

My Review
Sarah M. Eden has become known as one of the Queens of Historical Romance writers. This new offering from her solidifies her reputation as knowing how to write, as the title says, "A Proper Romance". This is another book from Shadow Mountain in the category of clean romances. There is a lot of love shown in the writing of this novel. Sarah is Irish and has a great love for the Irish people. In fact, I found this on her blog proclaiming her love for the Irish this past St. Patricks Day.

"For those of you who are new around here, St. Patrick's Day is kind of a big deal. Kind of a really big deal. On this blog, it is The Holiday of Coolness. At the Eden home, it is my birthday! It is also the day we ramp up our ordinarily enormous Irish pride to levels approaching lunacy. Everything we eat is green. Everything we wear is green. The house is filled with green, green, green. And this blog gets the same Irish makeover.

This year, St. Patrick's Day is even more fun. We had the amazing opportunity to spend Christmas in Ireland and came home even more in love with the culture, the history, the people. We're dying to go back."

So this is why I said there was so much love shown in the writing of this novel and the Irish people. We follow the story of Katie Macauley who left Ireland to come to America. Her heart is broken after the death of her sister and her parents blaming her for this loss. She meets two different men who start shifting her world around. There are many surprises for Katie as well as the readers. The transformation of Katie's spirit and will is a worth-while journey to take with this main character.

There is a lot of hatred shown to the Irish in the town of Hope Springs, Wyoming. Katie has to decide whether to stay or to return home to Ireland. Katie struggles for the gifts of hope and forgiveness. I love main character Katie and had such empathy for all of her struggles and what had happened in the past.

The romance is as good as ever, but I have a warning, everything is not resolved in this first book. I truly hope that the next installment is being written so we don't have to wait very long to continue reading about Katie.
