 Book Summary

Could Alice trade her passion for painting for a chance at love?

At the turn of the century, Alice Burnham says “no thank you” to the stuffy suitors Grandfather has chosen, and wants to forge her own path. Yet a loveless marriage to a man of wealth seems the best way to continue paying for her education at the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute. Grandfather has given her an ultimatum: Make a proper match on his terms by her next birthday or lose her inheritance. When Alice finds herself falling for a handsome young widower, she risks her painting career and must decide if marrying for love is too great a sacrifice

 My Review

A Brush With Love is a nice romance and an art lover's dream. I have friends that love to paint and they are going to love this book. Not only is there a sweet romance, a mystery involving thieves, but you also get art lessons in this book. This author gives so many examples with great descriptions of what main characters Alice and Max do while painting. I found it very fascinating as they were creating their masterpieces. This historical romance takes place at the turn of the century in San Francisco at the famous art institute. Things happening in history at the time were the women's suffragist movement, the Bubonic Plague in the Chinatown district, and the work of Donaldina Cameron who ran the Occidental Board of Foreign Missions home who took in Chinese girls and women being held as slaves. All of this history comes to life within the pages of A Brush With Love.

The romance is slow-building but has a satisfying end. The mystery is solved and Alice and Max do some good things for the community helping the mission home. I really liked how Alice and her grandfather finally came to an understanding. It was a nice journey to go on with the main character. This book will be liked by historical fiction and romance readers.
