Book Summary

A powerful story based on true events surrounding Donaldina Cameron and other brave women who fought to help Chinese-American women escape discrimination and slavery in the late 19th century in California.

When Donaldina Cameron arrives at the Occidental Mission Home for Girls in 1895, she intends to teach sewing skills to young Chinese women immigrants, but, within days, she discovers that the job is much more complicated than perfect stitches and even hems. San Francisco has a dark side, one where a powerful underground organization--the criminal tong--brings Chinese young women to America to sell them as slaves. With the help of Chinese interpreters and the Chinatown police squad, Donaldina becomes a tireless social reformer to stop the abominable slave and prostitution trade.

Mei Lien believes she is sailing to the "Gold Mountain" in America to become the wife of a rich Chinese man.Instead she finds herself sold into prostitution--beaten, starved, and forced into an opium addiction. It is only after a narrow escape that she hears of the mission home and dares to think there might be hope for a new life.

The Paper Daughters of Chinatown throws new light on the age-old scourge of human trafficking. The heroes who fought this evil and the victims who triumphed over it more than a hundred years ago offer a bright example of courage and determination for anyone wishing for a better world.

My Review

When was the last time you were deeply moved by a story? When did a story stay on your mind day and night? The Paper Daughters of Chinatown by Author Heather B. Moore is a story that will stay with you and change your thinking about many aspects that still plague society today.

Readers are introduced to Donaldina Cameron who accepts a job of teaching young Chinese girls how to sew who reside at
the Occidental Mission Home for Girls in 1895. Little does Donaldina, also known as Dolly, realize that this job will forever change her life. This novel based on the true story of Dolly's life showcases a sordid part of American History where young Chinese girls were given false papers to come to America under the guise of becoming wives or workers to rich Chinese men. Once in America, they were sold into slavery to become servants or prostitutes. The Chinese Criminal Tong ran the back streets of San Francisco in the 19th century in California. No one wanted to mess with them but it didn't stop Dolly or other women who worked with her.

The Occidental Mission Home for girls was founded in 1874 by the Presbyterian Church. The mission home's purpose was to offer refuge to the young Asian girls caught in the "yellow slave trade". Dolly became a light of freedom and a mother to many of these young girls. Through her tireless efforts and brave stand, she faced down the evil tong and rescued many girls in the middle of the night with the help of a few San Francisco police officers. This book is not a light or pleasant read at all times. Though there are no graphic details, readers do learn of the physical and substance abuse that took place. It's so heartbreaking to read of and feel the despair that these girls and women went through.

This book actually took me longer to read because of me being a history nerd and I love reading chapter notes. Once I read chapter notes then I go down another rabbit hole with something I read in the notes. Then eventually I'd get back to the story. Huge props to the author for the extensive research she did on this topic and on the life of Dolly.

I also loved the side story of the fictional character, Mei Lien, whose story showcases what happened to many of the girls who were lied to, brought to America, sold, and abused. I was so glad that this part of the story was told even if it was a fictional character.

The Paper Daughters of Chinatown is a story that must be read and talked about. The terrible tragedy of human trafficking is still happening today. This novel brings to light an issue that all people must be aware of and help and support those who are warriors today still fighting for those who can't help themselves. One line in the story really hit me that Officer Cook said to Dolly at the end of the novel and it's something we all should remember,

Officer Cook said, "We might live in the land of the free, but none of us are truly free as long as slavery exists in our society."

Author Heather B. Moore has written another compelling novel that I highly recommend to other readers. This story of courage and selflessness will touch you and illuminate the struggles still happening in our world today.

The Paper Daughters of Chinatown: Adapted for Young Readers by Heather B. Moore and Allison Hong Merrill-Middle Grade Fiction Book Review

 Book Summary

Based on the true story of two friends who unite to help rescue immigrant women and girls in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the late 1890s.

When Tai Choi leaves her home in the Zhejiang province of China, she believes it’s to visit her grandmother. But despite her mother’s opposition, her father has sold her to pay his gambling debts. Alone and afraid, Tai Choi is put on a ship headed for “Gold Mountain” (San Francisco). When she arrives, she’s forced to go by the name on her forged papers: Tien Fu Wu.

Her new life as a servant is hard. She is told to stay hidden, stay silent, and perform an endless list of chores, or she will be punished or sold again. If she is to survive, Tien Fu must persevere, and learn who to trust. Her life changes when she’s rescued by the women at the Occidental Mission Home for Girls.

When Dolly Cameron arrives in San Francisco to teach sewing at the mission home, she meets Tien Fu, who is willful, defiant, and unwilling to trust anyone. Dolly quickly learns that all the girls at the home were freed from servitude and maltreatment, and enthusiastically accepts a role in rescuing more.

Despite challenges, Dolly and Tien Fu forge a powerful friendship as they mentor and help those in the mission home and work to win the freedom of enslaved immigrant women and girls.

My Review
I was thrilled to receive the chance to read The Paper Daughters of Chinatown: Adapted for Young Readers. I read the original best-selling novel The Paper Daughters of Chinatown by Heather Moore. This book really touched readers and became a big hit. I was excited to read the version adapted for young readers done by both Heather B. Moore and Allison Hong Merrill.

If you want to read my review of the original book go HERE

I was very impressed by how the authors told this story for young people. The main ideas showed the sad facts of young girls being sold into slavery and prostitution without showing the more gritty and sordid side. The message of the love and empathy shown by Dolly and the other women who worked at The Occidental Mission Home for Girls is clearly shown in this new adaptation. My heart was again touched by the courage and fortitude of Dolly and her helpers.  Tien Fu Wu's story is highlighted in this version as she struggles to learn and to trust again after being sold as a slave several times. Her story is one that will stay with you for quite some time. At the end of this novel, the main character focus of the original novel, Mei Lien was brought into the spotlight.

I truly enjoyed reading this adapted version of The Paper Daughters of Chinatown. Though the harshness from the original has been toned down, I'm glad there is a way to share the stories of the many girls whose lives were turned upside down but were given hope and redemption because of Dolly Cameron and The Occidental Mission Home for Girls.

Allison Hong Merrill
Allison was born and raised in Taiwan and arrived in the U.S. at age twenty-two as a university student. That's when she realized her school English wasn't much help when asking for directions on the street or opening a bank account. By recording each of the classes she took––including physical education––and reviewing the tape every night for a year, she eventually learned English well enough to earn an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. But please excuse her if she misuses the verb tenses or mixes up the genders in third-person pronouns when she speaks. It's no secret; English is a hard language to learn.

Book Summaries

A Wyoming Summer is the fourth book in the Timeless Western Collection, a bestselling anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from acclaimed historical romance authors whose stories ask if true love can survive the changing seasons?

“Ellen Found,” by Carla Kelly

Set in the location of Old Faithful Inn, 1903-4. Working in a discouraging café, Ellen escapes an awful situation in rough and tumble Butte, Montana, and goes to work as second in command to a wary cook in the shell that will become Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone Park. She meets Charles Penrose, head carpenter on the massive project of Old Faithful Inn, which is being finished in a harsh Wyoming winter. Will it really open June 1, 1904? Can Ellen start to trust the other workers? What will she learn about the other employees? And Charles. He's a widower with a young daughter there, too. Like Ellen, he wants more.

“The Widow of Daybreak,” by Christine Sterling

Doris Whistler is learning how to survive in a town taken over by outlaws. When the leader of an infamous gang murders her husband, her choices are to tuck tail and run, or stand her ground and make Daybreak as promising as its name. It proves to be a difficult task with the good citizens in fear of the corrupt mayor and godlessness that abounds. What she doesn't expect is the support of a traveling lawman who believes in her and the tiny town she loves so much.

“May I Kiss the Bride,” by Heather B. Moore

Viola Delany is not happy about being sent to the middle-of-nowhere, small-town Wyoming. Yes, it will be good to let the gossips find something else to talk about other than her failed engagement. And yes, it will be nice to spend the summer with her Aunt Beth. But as Viola sits on the train heading for Wyoming, wondering how she'll ever occupy her time in such a small town, none other than a real-life cowboy sits across the way. She can't help but take peeks at him, noting that the condition of his unpolished black boots and scuffed rawhide jacket seem to be authentic . . . All right, so he might be tall, dark-haired, and handsome if a woman doesn't mind green eyes and a dangerous-looking scar, but this man certainly has nothing to do with her. Besides she'll never see him again. What are the chances he's traveling to the same middle-of-nowhere small town?

ABOUT THE SERIES

My Review

I truly love reading the Timeless Romance Anthologies. This Timeless Western Collection is right near the top of my favorites. Every story took place in Wyoming around the same time period but each was very different and unique.

Ellen Found by Carla Kelly takes place in Yellowstone National Park when the Old Faithful Inn was being built. I love this park and have visited the Inn many times through the years. I could see in my mind so much of what was being described as the Inn was being built. The story was very cute and had sweet and scary moments. The love story was a slow build but felt so natural and I loved the friendship between Ellen and Charle's Daughter.

The second story was The Widow of Daybreak by Christine Sterling. It was a real rough and tough Western tale that takes place in an old Western town. There is the gang of slimy bad guys and the sad widow with her two daughters. Brave Dora is threatened by a greasy outlaw but thank goodness there is a handsome cowboy to save the day.

The Third novella is May I Kiss the Bride by Heather B. Moore. I love any story that Heather writes because of how quickly she draws readers into a story. Right from the start I loved the main characters of Viola and Rey. As soon as they meet their chemistry is evident and I loved all of their interactions. I also loved Viola's Aunt Beth and Rey's young daughter Elsie.

Not only did all three have great love stories, but they also showed the strength of women during this time period and being more assertive in the early 1900s. I very much enjoyed this anthology and know that this book will truly make the perfect summer read.
