Promises and Primroses (Mayfield Family Series) by Josi S. Kilpack- Blog Tour Review

Promises and Primroses

Author: Josi S. Kilpack
Genres: Regency/Historical Romance
Format: Paperback • Pages: 336

Book Summary
Lord Elliott Mayfield aims to correct the very messy marital mistakes and spousal scandals of his brothers and sisters by requiring his nieces and nephews to choose worthy companions.  If they choose wisely, they will receive their generous share of the family’s inheritance.

Peter, Elliott’s eldest nephew, thinks the entire idea is ridiculous. A widower with two young daughters, he simply needs a governess, not a wife. Julia Hollingsworth certainly has the credentials and the experience, but is altogether too young and pretty for such a job. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?

Julia loves working as a governess, despite the objections of her mother, Amelia. And as it turns out, Amelia has a lot to say about the Mayfield men—none of it good. But Julia dismisses the rumors of ruined reputations and instead concentrates on helping Peter with his children and his fledgling business in canine husbandry. His kindness and gentleness is endearing—and increasingly attractive.

But Amelia, whose heart was broken thirty years ago by none other than Elliott Mayfield, is determined to prevent any relationship from blooming either between Peter and Julia—or between herself and Elliott.

Hearts and history collide as both couples must face their pasts and decide if risking it all is worth the promise of new love and a new future.

My Review
Promises and Primroses is a delightful first book in the Mayfield Family Series.I picked up the book and before I knew it, I had already finished half of the book in one sitting. The novel showcases four different POV stories: Elliott Mayfield, Peter Mayfield, Amelia and Julia Hollingsworth. We are first introduced to Lord Elliott Mayfield who is trying to change the family name to good after many scandals through the years.Out of his many nephews and nieces, only one, Peter, has lived a low-key and non scandalous life.Elliott is starting a marriage campaign to see all of his nieces and nephews married to respectable people.Peter of course refuses to play this game.I'm hoping that other books in the series will highlight the rest of Elliott's nieces and nephews.

This story is really about two different couples. Elliott and Amelia who were almost engaged 30 years ago and now Amelia is very bitter about the break up. She is totally against her daughter working as a governess for Peter. My favorite couple though were Peter and Julia. These were two people not looking for love but it came sailing in very gently and it surprises both of them. I loved Peter's daughters and how quickly Julia came to love the girls.

I also was really liking the part of the story about Peter's canine husbandry business. Julia's father had done the same thing while alive and she had helped her father with his dogs. Julia comes in and ends up being amazing with Peter's dogs as well as his daughters.

The only person that got on my nerves at all was Julia's mother Amelia. It was because of her prejudice and bitter feelings towards Elliott that made her so antagonistic towards Peter. Readers do realize that Amelia is not a totally horrible person because of how she treats others in her village.

Overall, I really, really like this book and this new series. The characters were written so well just like this author always does. I've been reading Josi's books for many years now. She has such a talent for creating such wonderful stories that leave you wanting more. I know I want to read more about the Mayfield family.

Excerpt
"Uncle, but I have no desire to marry again, as I believe
you are aware. With an estate already under my care and your
holdings that will one day pass to me, I do not need the security
you have put forward for the others, nor do I need motivation
toward living a respectable life.”

“You are exactly right,” Elliott said with a deep nod. “You do
not need motivation or financial security, but, as I told you, each
gift is tailored to the person. Aren’t you the least bit curious as to
what I devised as a gift for your future?”

Peter put his hands in his lap. “I am not.”

Elliott sighed. “You are still a young man, Peter. You deserve
a companion to see you through the remaining years of your life,
and your daughters deserve a mother. I believe with my whole
heart that Sybil would want that for you.”

“Forgive me, uncle, but you did not know Sybil and have no
basis for such an assumption.”

Elliott inclined his head, acknowledging the truth of that observation.
“And the fact that you do not have an heir?”

Peter stood abruptly. With his broad shoulders and athletic
physique, he was quite the commanding presence when his ire
was fueled, as it was now.
He grabbed for his jacket. “Timothy’s son will be my heir just
as I was heir for you.”

“Timothy has no son.”

“But he will. Especially now that he will have additional
reason for doing so.” Peter’s certitude was admirable. “So, while
I thank you for this”—he waved toward the untouched folder,
barely concealing his bitterness—“I do not share the circumstances
of my siblings or my cousins. I married well, I am raising
my daughters in the privilege they deserve, and I am living an
upstanding life. I have no desire for anything else. Now, if you
would excuse me.”

Elliott stood and hurried around the table to take hold of
Peter’s arm before the boy could escape. “I did not mean to offend
you, Peter. I am sorry.”

Peter’s dark eyes were cold. “Apology accepted. I truly must
be on my way, uncle.”

Elliott dropped his nephew’s arm, and Peter left, the door
closing behind him with a snap. This was not how Elliott had
hoped the first campaign proposal would go. He’d imagined Peter
defensive at first, of course, but eventually seeing Elliott’s motivations
in their purest light and being gracious and touched, not
offended. Perhaps Elliott did not have the people-management
skills he so highly prized after all.

Elliott walked to the east window of his study and scrubbed a
hand over his face. Peter was right about Elliott having never met
Sybil. But he still believed Sybil would not want her husband and
daughters to be alone. Elliott had hoped the wedding campaign
would bring Peter out of mourning. It had been four years.
Then again, what could Elliott say against Peter’s decision to
remain a widower? Elliott had never loved anyone the way Peter
had loved Sybil—though there had been a woman he might have
loved that way.

Amelia Edwards had filled him with light, and he had expected
that they would marry. Then his father had died and
everything had changed. Elliott had stepped into the title, the
debts, and the role as head of the family, and the young woman
he’d wanted to be his wife had instead become a part of his past
and his sacrifice. The life that had followed had not brought love
again. Elliott’s ambition now was to see his nieces and nephews secure and his family name restored for the benefit of future generations.
The satisfaction of those things would make up for what
he’d wanted for himself but could not have. At least that was what
he had hoped. It might take a bit of time before he recovered
from the unexpected conclusion of his first presentation. With
a bit more attention, and perhaps tact, he vowed the next would
go better.

 Book Summary
Timothy Mayfield is ready to marry for love, but, since his personal finances are thinner than he’d like, he knows he’ll also need to find a wife with wealth. After receiving an unexpected inheritance, Timothy’s circumstances change, and he is free to pursue his “perfect woman”—one with blonde hair, blue eyes, a light laugh, arched eyebrows, elegant fingers, and a dazzling smile, among nearly twenty other characteristics.

Maryann Morrington doesn’t match anything on Timothy’s list—except for wealth. An heiress in her own right, she is tired of men pursuing her only for her money. But at nearly twenty-two years old, and not a particularly stunning beauty, she can’t be as picky as her friend Timothy is.

The two friends end up playing matchmaker for each other. Timothy will find a decent gentleman for Maryann, and Maryann will prove to Timothy that his “perfect woman” doesn’t exist.

Until Miss Shaw comes to London.

Now, with Timothy’s heart captivated by the blonde, blue-eyed beauty, Maryann must decide if she should risk her heart and reveal her true feelings for her friend, or if she should settle for someone else. It’s an up-and-down game of “he loves me, he loves me not” with both hearts and friendship on the line.

My Review
Oh, was I excited to start reading Daisies and Devotion the second book in the Mayfield Family Series! I'm one of those diehards that always recommend you read the first book in the series. It will make the whole second story richer and of course, makes more sense overall. Also, the cover is just gorgeous so it invites readers to delve into the pages quickly.

In this series Elliott Mayfield, Timothy's Uncle, promises him money and land if he'll marry someone he approves of.  Elliott is doing the same with his other nieces and nephews. Timothy agrees because he was already in London looking for a wife with money but now he doesn't need the money so he writes his list. This list is of his perfect woman. The woman who'd held his interest previously was the rich Maryann who now realizes she doesn't quite fit the qualities he's looking for in a wife. From the beginning, these two characters have a unique relationship. They are good friends that help each other search for perfect marriage prospects. Of course, readers can see what will eventually happen, but this will lead them spending a lot of time together and they do grow closer.

Timothy is somewhat the clueless male that can't see what is right in front of him. Maryann puts up with a lot of nonsense from him but never speaks her mind and her true heart. There are many humorous conversations and situations that will make you laugh. There are also many things that happen that will make you frustrated. In the end, I loved this book! I enjoyed the wonderful character development and the growth of both Timothy and Maryann.

I would not call this your typical Regency Romance because Maryann is not your regular swooning heroine. I liked that and she reminded me a lot of myself that doesn't put up with a lot of nonsense and tries to protect my heart. Josi Kilpack has once again written a captivating novel of romance, humor, and witty dialogue that kept me reading nonstop. Regency Romance lovers will also love this one too.

Book Summary

Seaside, England 1886

Eva Caldwell is an accomplished and well-known photographer who often works with the local constabulary to assist in documenting crime scenes, which means she also often works alongside the handsome and charming Detective Nathan Winston. She appreciates his intellect and how he treats her like an equal, but Eva’s heart is still healing from a past relationship, so, for now, she decides to keep her feelings for Nathan a secret.

One evening, Nathan arrives on her doorstep asking for a personal favor. Would Eva be available to photograph his mother’s legendary, week-long dinner party and matchmaking event? The catch is that Eva would also have to pretend they are courting in order for Nathan to avoid the many single women seeking his attention.

Though wary of the charade, Eva agrees. Spending a week with the two things she loves most—her detective and her camera—sounds simple enough. And if she wants to imagine that Nathan’s pretend courtship of her is real, well, what’s the harm in that?

But when a criminal from Nathan’s past threatens revenge on the detective, Nathan must be extra vigilant to keep his mother and the rest of the partygoers safe. He confides in Eva, and as the two work together to solve the mystery and apprehend the criminal, they find that they might capture more than they expected—each other’s heart.

My Review
To Capture His Heart was a really fun book. This is the second book in the Matchmakers series and the first book was great. Guess what? This second book is equal to the first. I so loved the characters, the plot, the mystery, and the romance.

The whole story revolves around a week-long matchmaking house party in Seaside, England in 1886. The secondary characters in the first book are now the main characters in the second book. Nathan and Eva have worked together on criminal cases before; he as a detective, and she as a police photographer. They have grown to like each other a lot but both are scared to ruin their friendship by declaring their true feelings. Nathan invites Eva to his mother's matchmaking party as his "love interest" and his mother wants her there for her photography talents. Blend in a criminal on the run who wants revenge on Nathan, jealous, petty males and females, witty banter, and you have a story that's hard to put down. The young boy Sammy is back as Eva's assistant and there are nasty mean girls too. It doesn't matter what era, they have always been there.

The best part of the book overall is how Nathan and Eva's romance advances in this 10-day journey at the party. There were so many moments that I had to re-read because I just loved them so much, especially those that involved caves and a maze. I also enjoyed Nathan's mother and his clever and supportive sisters. I would love to see more books in the future dedicated to each sister finding their true love.

To Capture His Heart can be read as a stand-alone read. This novel will make an excellent gift for any romance reader in your life, including yourself.

Advance Praise:

“A photographer and a detective go from friends to lovers while searching for a killer in this thrilling Victorian romance. The couple's connection is so undeniable that even readers who usually look for heat in their romances won't mind the lack of steamy scenes. This delectable treat is sure to keep readers guessing.”

—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Allen once again combines love and mystery in her second "Matchmakers" series installment (following The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart). Readers will enjoy how the intrigue and romance increase in tandem, ratcheting up the suspense, while Eva's competent demeanor that hides a bruised heart makes this love story all the more touching.”
