Too Clever for Courtship (Bridger Brothers Book 5) by Kate Condie-Sweet Historical Western Romance Review

 Book Synopsis

She’s spent her life immersed in books.

Desperate to live the kind of adventure she’s only read about, Molly Marx joined her cousins on the perilous journey westward. But the Oregon Trail is far more dangerous than she imagined. When her trusty guidebook doesn’t have the answers she needs, Molly finds herself drawn to the rugged wagon master whose instincts prove that not everything can be contained on a page.

He’s spent his life traversing the trail.

Fox Lee has long since turned his back on guiding travelers west, but a request from an old friend brings him back for one final journey. Escorting a group of mail-order brides to Oregon is supposed to be straightforward—until tragedy strikes, and Fox is suddenly in charge of an entire wagon company. With his past weighing heavily on him, he’s not sure he has the ability to lead these folks to safety. And when Molly’s incessant questions challenge every decision he makes, Fox is forced to confront the doubt buried in his heart.

But surrender is the one frontier neither of them has dared cross.

As the Oregon Trail grows more treacherous, can Fox find the peace he’s been searching for, or will Molly’s thirst for adventure lead them both into uncharted territory?

Saddle up for the Oregon Trail in Too Clever for Courtship, a sweet historical western romance. Enjoy it as a standalone adventure or as Book 5 of the Bridger Brothers series.

My Review

The Bridger Brothers series delivers one great book after another. Book five shifts to their cousin, Molly Marx. She leaves behind her rich life—fancy home, fashionable outfits, endless cash—to escape her parents' pushy matchmaking. She rejects every suitor.  Molly is intelligent, caring, and very single at 27, an "old maid" by society standards. Her aunt, uncle, and cousins head west to Oregon and Molly joins them on the Oregon Trail.

Fox Lee vowed to never lead wagon trains again after a past disaster. He takes on a load of brides to Oregon for his pal Jacob. Disaster strikes, and Fox steps up as leader. He fights to stop the brides chasing single guys who have husbands awaiting them. Deep down, he questions whether he can keep people safe after his previous tragic experience, while living in the shadow of his successful father.

Fox and Molly clash like thunder. Hate sparks first, and it's funny how hate eventually flips to attraction. Both swear they're not ready for marriage. I adored every Fox-Molly encounter. He sees her as bold and mule-headed. She views him as bossy, close-minded, and grumpy.

This was a beautifully written story that showed fights, scares, sickness, and broken hearts for those chasing a brighter future. Fox goes on an emotional journey to heal his heart and confidence. Molly has a big part in helping him while he helps her realize she needs to let her walls down and allow love into her life. I loved how their relationship developed, leading to happiness and a sweet epilogue.

I absolutely loved Too Clever for Courtship. The whole series has been amazing, and book five can be read as a standalone...but like I always say, read the first four books before this one. Author Kate Condie knows how to write brilliant stories in this genre. I can't wait to read book six next.

****Meet Author Kate Condie****

Kate Condie is a speed talker from Oregon. Reading has been part of her life since childhood, where she devoured everything from mysteries, to classics, to autobiographies—and of course, romance. At first, her writing was purely in journal format as she thought writing novels was for the lucky ones. She lives in Utah and spends her days surrounded by mountains with her favorite hunk, their four children and her laptop. In her free time she reads, tries to learn a host of new instruments, binge watches anything by BBC or tries to keep up with Lafayette as she sings the Hamilton soundtrack.

My Review

Snowbound Regency Christmas features three stories that showcase couples and how they unexpectedly find love in surprising ways.

In A Christmas Houseguest by Carla Kelly, there is a story of a snowbound young soldier with PTSD. He ends up at the home of a caring family who show him great kindness, and there he meets the beautiful Rose. This novella was a very touching story.

In Their Yuletide Reunion by Joanna Johnson, we find a story of second chances. Jane and Duncan both have things to work through before love comes again. There is a theme of accepting one another despite their flaws. This was a sweet story.

In The Christmas Husband Charade by Samantha Hastings, it is an enemies-to-lovers novella. There is also a lot of humor in the witty banter that takes place between Devon and Julia. The forced proximity theme also plays a large hand where they both are stranded in an inn during a fierce snowstorm. With a stormy past, they soon learn that there is more to the person than they previously thought they knew.

Snowbound Regency Christmas is a sweet collection of non-typical, clean love stories. These fast reads are ones to pick up and read at the end of a cold winter's day.

****Meet the Authors****

Carla Kelly

I started writing Regencies because of interest in the Napoleonic Wars. I like writing about warfare at sea and ordinary people of the British Isles, rather than lords and ladies. In my spare time I like to read British crime fiction and history, particularly the U.S. Indian Wars. I currently live in Utah. I'm a former park ranger, and double Rita Award and Spur Award winner. I have five interesting children and four grands. Favorite authors include Robert Crais and Richard Woodman.

Joanna Johnson

Joanna Johnson lives in a little village with her husband and too many books. After completing an English degree at university she went on to work in publishing, although she'd always wish she was working on her own books rather than other people's. This dream came true in 2018 when she signed her first contract with Harlequin and she hasn't looked back, spending her time getting lost in mainly Regency history and wishing it was acceptable to write a manuscript using a quill.

Samantha Hastings

Samantha Hastings met her husband in a turkey sandwich line. They live in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she spends most of her time reading, having tea parties, and chasing her kids. She has degrees from Brigham Young University, University of North Texas, and University of Reading (UK). She’s the author of several YA Regency titles and also writes cozy murder mysteries under Samantha Larsen. Learn more at SamanthaHastings.com

My Review

All of the books in The Healing Series have been wonderful, and The Healing Holiday has followed suit. No surprise here because Heather B. Moore is one of my favorite authors.

From the start, I sensed the deep emotion, grief, courage, and love. Dani Jacobs just lost her mom and has the hard task of cleaning her house. While clearing the house, she finds her own adoption papers. Dani had no clue she was adopted. Early chapters hit close to home. My mom passed in 2023. I found my birth family in 2020, but I always knew I was adopted. Dani's pain tugged at my heart. She wrestled with her mom's loss, plus the adoption shock. Heather captures feelings so deeply. You live them with the characters. Emotions swung high and low for Dani and her birth mom, Sylvie.

I  loved to see Dani's bond grow with her birth mom, Sylvia. They found pure joy in each other, but they both had many hurdles to overcome. The story needs a charming guy, too—Jay, the lodge owner. His six-year-old daughter, Polly, steals every scene with her cuteness. Every moment with them made me smile. Dani's arrival in their lives made it even better. Love grew between them so easily, and there were also many humorous things along the way.

The Healing Holiday lives up to its name as characters face their pasts, find forgiveness, and begin to heal. It’s a perfect Christmas read, taking you on an emotional journey of a family that comes together in a way that truly brings joy.

Once Upon a Christmas Carol: A Christmas Novella By Melody Carlson-Christmas Book Review

 Book Synopsis

Can a tropical escape from holiday blues turn her Christmas into a snowy wonderland filled with joy and cheer?

Carol Langstrom hates Christmas. Growing up in a dysfunctional home, with a birthday on December 25 and too many dashed childhood expectations, the holiday season is something she would rather avoid. And working in the design industry where she manages seasonal decor for wealthy, entitled clients certainly hasn't helped!

So, this year her goal is to flee to the Bahamas--by herself--bah humbug! But bad weather and God's radically different plan redirect her flight to blustery Michigan, where she gets stuck on her aunt's farm and discovers a different kind of Christmas--one wrapped in love, family, and holiday spirit.

Melody Carlson's Christmas novella delivers all the charm of a holiday Hallmark movie, is rooted in Christian faith, woven with sweet romance, and features A Christmas Carol themes.

My Review

Once Upon a Christmas Carol pulls you right in with its charm. Who could hate Christmas? The lead character, Carol Langstrom, at first seems like a Grinch. She has solid reasons for her sour mood. Born on Christmas Day, she grew up in a broken home. Her holidays and birthdays were always disappointing. She heads to the Bahamas to skip the cheer. A big winter storm ruins her plans, and she lands in Michigan, decked out in her summer wear. The hotels have no space, so she calls her aunt, a stranger her mom can't stand, whom she has never met. That's how the Christmas magic begins. She steps into a snowy, farm wonderland, accompanied by a warm house, an affectionate aunt, and a handsome neighbor.

Every bit of this story won me over. Carol's mood shifts because of Aunt Maria's pure kindness and love. Turns out, the aunt had been wrongly portrayed by Carol's mom. In truth, she shines as a kind soul. I liked how Carol moved from distrust and gloom to opening up her heart and embracing love and romance. Victor, the attractive neighbor, helps a lot, too. He, along with Aunt Maria, shows Carol the joy in family, friends, and Christmas.

You end the book with cozy warmth and holiday cheer. This story of small-town life, found family, and tender romance deserves a spot on your yearly Christmas read list.
