Book Description:
Jake Merrill was raised by his grandmother, Ruby, and her hilarious friends. After a suspicious death at the retirement home where Ruby lives, she enlists Jake and Chanel, the beautiful activities director, to help her find the killer.

But secrets Ruby has kept for decades threaten her family and the man she’s always loved but could never have. Chanel’s unstable ex-boyfriend, a presumably dead relative, and vicious criminals add to the confusion. Time is running out as Jake, Chanel, and Ruby desperately search for clues to solve the murders and fight to save those they love.

My Review:
Are you ready for another murder mystery? You have come to the right place. This one takes place in small town Preston, Idaho...not far from where I grew up.Poison Me is centered around the happenings in a retirement center. I loved how the senior citizens are portrayed with life and spunk. Not all "old" people sit in a chair in a stupor of dementia. My Mom is in her early 80's and is active (physcially and mentally) and full of spirit. So, to have Author Cami Checketts portray the residents of the retirement center like my Mom, it brought a smile to my face! Ruby, Ellie and Marissa are life-long friends who investigate the strange deaths of their friends at the center. They search to figure out who/what is causing their friends to die. There is also romance for Ruby and her former beau, Michael.

The other storyline involves Ruby's grandson Jake and Chanel, a worker at the center and their romance. Both story lines blend well together with all of the characters interacting and working together. There is plenty of action, intrigue, heartfelt scenes, and  humor to be found in this novel. Some of the conversations of our three older female friends totally cracked me up! It truly is LOL humor. Also, be ready to shed a few tears as the story progresses.

This novel is sure to be enjoyed by older teens, and all adults. If you like a good mystery, with a mixture of tender/sad moments, and some humor sprinkled in, Poison Me, needs to be put on your to-read list today.

Excerpt From Poison Me

Chanel Roberts slammed the back door of her Jetta. In the trunk and back seat, she’d loaded everything she would need for the next few weeks. As part of her severance package, a moving company would ship the contents of her apartment wherever she requested—how kind of her employer, after firing her for something she didn’t do.
A hand wrapped around her waist. She screamed.
“Chanel, it’s me.” Ace spun her to face him, his blue eyes reflecting the bright lights of the parking lot.
She wielded her keys like a weapon. “Let go of me.”
He slowly released his hold but didn’t back away. Chanel yanked open the driver’s side door. If I can just get into my car and call the police. She got one foot inside before Ace grabbed her arm.
“You have to listen to me for a second.”
She tried to pull free. “No, I don’t. You set me up. I lost my job, and I lost—.” Chanel choked back the word and the sob. She’d almost admitted she was more upset about losing him than she was about him ruining her life.
“It was Willy’s fault. Please, you have to believe me. I’ll make it up to you. We’ll go away and—”
Suddenly, a large, muscular man ripped Ace away from the car, wrenching Chanel’s arm in the process.
“Thought you could run away with your girlfriend and leave me behind?” It was Willy, Ace’s repulsive friend.
Ace smacked his fist into Willy’s face. The blow hardly affected the bigger man. Chanel dove into her car, shoved her keys in the ignition, and yanked on the door. Willy stuck his arm inside the car. The door smacked his bicep and he grunted, but kept reaching towards Chanel.
Panting for breath, she turned the key, jammed the Jetta into reverse, and slammed her foot down on the gas pedal. The car flew backwards, flipping Ace and Willy away from it. Chanel wrenched the steering wheel, closed the door, and pushed the gas pedal to the floor.
The Jetta shot off through the parking lot. Chanel risked a glance in the rearview mirror. Ace and Willy scrambled from the ground. Ace reached out to her with one hand. She turned the corner, dialing 9-1-1 and cursing herself for looking back.

Praise for Poison Me

Poison Me made me laugh out loud and thoroughly enjoy myself. I wish I had a friend like Ruby! Snappy dialogue, romance, and a strong sense of family made this book well worth reading.

 Book Description:
An Alaskan cruise is the setting for amateur detective Sadie Hoffmillers latest adventure. Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. But even as the crew prepares to leave port, Sadie has suspicions about the voyage ahead and the relationship between her normally easygoing son and a mysterious female passenger he obviously knows but refuses to discuss. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

My Review:
Come sail away with Sadie Hoffmiller, as she cruises along to a new mystery. Sadie is on a cruise with her boyfriend, Pete, and her children, Breanna and Shawn. This "fun" family vacation soon turns into anything but fun. Sadie's son Shawn has been keeping a secret from his Mom. This secret has followed then to Alaska and turns their lives upside down.

I was thrilled to read about an Alaskan cruise. This is the cruise that I have wanted to go on for years. How exciting to read about the places and adventures that I have been dreaming about!

After reading the whole series now (Books 1-9), this has to be one of my favorites. For one, this is the book where we really get to know Pete, Sadie's boyfriend. Sadie is in her late 50's and has found a great love. Readers will truly see how devoted this couple is to each other. We also spend more time getting to know Sadie's children, Breanna and Shawn. I liked how more personal this book felt. Once again we are bedazzled by all of the great food/recipes that are talked about and eaten in this book. I have been so inspired by all of Sadie books I have been reading, that I made homemade bread and Lasagna tonight for my family.

As with all of the books in this series, there are many twists and turns that keep you hanging until the end. Josi's writing keeps you involved in the story, and not wanting to put the book down until the last paragraph. I know that each of these books can be read on their own, but I highly suggest reading them in the order that they were written. My reasoning for this, the more you read about Sadie, the more you feel like you are revisiting an old friend. Each book has drawn me more and more into the character and her life. I can't wait until I can visit once more with Sadie in Rocky Road this Fall.

Guest Post from Author Josi Kilpack************
With Josi writing culinary mysteries, I wanted to know what she likes to bake at her home. So here is her top 10 things she likes to bake.

Josi's Top Ten Things She Likes To Bake
1) 5 minute Artisan Bread. You can Google this recipe. It's fascinating and so easy. I could eat this at every meal and I keep an ice cream bucket of dough in my fridge in case I decide to do so.

2) No bake cookies. This is a cheat because it's not really 'baked' but it's quick to throw together and surprisingly good. It's a family favorite.

3) Butterfinger cookies. (From Key Lime Pie) I make these almost any time I need to bring cookies anywhere, they are always a crowd pleaser.

4) 30 minute chocolate cake. This is more like brownies in a jelly roll pan, complete with frosting. Easy. Fast. Soooooo good.

5) Bread Pudding. (From Baked Alaska) I love, love, love bread pudding but when I found this recipe, I feel in love even deeper. I get excited when the bread on the counter starts drying out because I know I can justify a panful.

6) Lemon High Tea cookies (From English Trifle) One of my test kitchen bakers (Whit Larson) gave me this recipe and I looooooove it. It's made with 2 cups of corn starch and melts in your mouth. I usually eat them until I get sick.

7) Rhodes pull apart. Shhhhh, I know I shouldn't cook with frozen dough but it's so easy. I thaw out a bunch of regular dinner rolls, then flatten them out to a breadstick shape, dip them in melted butter and line them up lengthwise in a mini-bread pan. I pack them in as tight as I can and sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top. I put them in a cold oven, set it to 350 and take them out after about 25 minutes, when the tops are crispy. They never last until morning.

8) Rice Crispy treats. Another cheat, but oh how we love them at the Kilpack house!

9) Cobbler. I can a lot of fruit and can easily whip this up (recipe in Blackberry Crumble)

10) Homemade dinner rolls. I have a couple recipes I go back and forth with and I love them all. Have I mentioned that I love bread?
Josi

Praise for Baked Alaska
Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie's life wouldn't be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just "happens" and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie's character, even if she is a busybody, you can't help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. :)

Published: February 2013

SUMMARY

Kaila Guidry has always known she is different. When she meets Jordyn Stryker at school, she finds out just how different.

When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn awakens her to a new reality—and to love. But to prove herself, Kaila must look the other way as the real purposes of the starseeds unfold.

As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves inexorably forward, Kaila and Jordan, caught in an impossible love, must determine where their true loyalties lie.

Praise

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an entertaining read. I highly recommend."
--Patricia B. Smith. Author “What the Animals Tell Me” and “Fifty Shades of Santa” (clean romance fiction)

"Liz Gruder’s characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine, Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader’s encouragement from the first page. Fans of Amanda Hocking will find themselves similarly transported into Gruder’s exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher dimensions, and, of course, high school." --Jadie Jones, young-adult fantasy author

Kale Rollins’ life has become a living nightmare. As if it wasn’t awkward enough being an adopted normal kid in a family of purebred shapeshifters, he was now being transferred to a new school made solely for their kind. And it gets worse. He must attend this school under the pretense that he too is a shapeshifter, in order to “babysit” his fourteen year old brother who has suddenly shifted a year earlier than expected.

Before he even reaches the school, he finds himself in the middle of a feud that could become life-threatening to him and his brother.

Unexpectedly friendships are formed as he chooses a side - So are enemies.

There is one girl though through it all that makes him want to stay. Except the closer he gets to Lavallette Waters, the harder it is to keep up his façade.

As secrets start to unravel around him, Kale wonders what will happen next…

Will “babysitting” his brother be the death of him?

Can he really trust Lavallette?

And how much more time do they have before someone they care about disappears?

Book Trailer for: The Shifted!

My Review:
I'm a big fan of books where the characters shift into other creatures, so I was super excited to read, The Shifted. Right off I really liked main character Kale. I liked his personality and his voice. He is a very well written character. You are in his corner from the first few pages.Kale seems to be the oddball in his family, in that he can't shift like everyone else can. Kale finds himself taking care of his younger brother,Scout, who is being sent to a school for his kind, shapeshifters. This brings all sorts of trouble for Kale.

The romance between Kale and Kit was nice and believable. Even after Kale tells Kit his huge secret, she still loves him. As the story unfolded, and more clues were dropped about Kale's "possible" background, the story heated up. As the truth about Kale comes out, even more very likable characters come into play. This story is interesting, original, and fun.

This first volume ends very well, but leaves everything open for a second book. I truly hope that a second book will be out soon. This is a series that I love, and will be supporting author Natalie Carlisle in promoting. This book is suitable for tweens, teens, and adults, and will be enjoyed by all audiences. I highly recommend it!

Author Bio:
Having developed a love for reading, writing, and drawing at a very young age, Natalie has often been described as being creative and artistic. Spending most of her free time caught up in the make-believe world, whether it was something she read or something she wrote, because she enjoyed the adventure and mostly the happily-ever-after endings.

To this day, she still loves the happily-ever after endings. When she is not curled up on a couch reading, writing a poem, short-story or these days a new young adult novel; or getting her hands covered with paint and oil pastels, she can be found running; taking pictures of nature; watching her favorite movies like Grumpy Old Men, Turner and Hooch and Sweet Home Alabama; or simply just spending quality time with her husband and their two American Bull Dogs.

Though currently residing in New Jersey, Natalie makes frequent trips back to her hometown in Pennsylvania.
