"I" is for Improvise

Improvise:
  1. perform without preparation; "he extemporized a speech at the wedding"
  2. manage in a makeshift way; do with whatever is at hand; "after the hurricane destroyed our house, we had to improvise for weeks"
  3. To compose, recite, or sing extemporaneously, especially in verse; to extemporize; also, to play upon an instrument, or to act, extemporaneously.
  4. To produce or render extemporaneous compositions, especially in verse or in music, without previous preparation; hence, to do anything offhand.
These are all definitions for Improvise. We have all had to improvise at one time in our lives. I have always seen this as a gift that someone has. Some people are better at improvising than others. Truly this is something that all people should learn how to do.

I once sang a solo at my Mom's class reunion. For some reason, my mind went blank when I came to the second verse of the song. I improvised and made up the words that fit in very well with the song. The only people that knew what had happened was my accompanist on the piano and my Mom. This was not the last time I have had to improvise while singing or speaking. The ability to think quickly on your feet is something that I am happy I am able to do. As a teacher I have used this talent many times through the years. How are you at improvising?

  1. I am better at improvising in the nursery than in Relief Society. It must be the audience.

  2. I think I'm not so bad at improvising. You're right. It's a skill we all should have to some degree or another.

  3. A lot of writing is improvising isn't it. I have a few plot points to start with, but when you get down to writing a scene you throw the characters on stage and write as fast as they move and talk.
